Following intense scrutiny and a series of retractions from various sources, the international news network Al Jazeera has withdrawn a highly controversial report alleging that Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers committed acts of rape at the Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.
The original story had gained traction across social media platforms and sparked widespread indignation, as it included testimony from a woman named Jamila al-Hissi, who claimed to have witnessed horrifying acts committed by Israeli soldiers during the IDF’s operation against Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists. The narrative described Israeli soldiers engaging in sexual violence against women, followed by killings and other brutal acts.
However, the tale began to unravel as Hamas investigations purportedly revealed that the account of sexual violence at Shifa Hospital was unfounded. Yasser Abuhilalah, a prominent figure associated with Al Jazeera, took to social media to make public that the story was baseless. In his post, he stated: “It was revealed through Hamas investigations that the story of the rape of women in Al-Shifa Hospital was fabricated… The woman who spoke about rape justified her exaggeration and incorrect talk by saying that the goal was to arouse the nation’s fervor and brotherhood.”
The retraction has sparked significant debate over journalistic ethics and the spread of misinformation. This is especially sensitive given that Al Jazeera has been criticized for being a mouthpiece for the Qatari regime, which has been accused of harboring leaders from Hamas – designated a terror organization by multiple nations. The credibility of the allegations was further diminished when Al-Hessi admitted during a live interview that she had not actually been present in the Shifa Hospital complex and that her claims were based on hearsay.
The implications of such a story have been profound, with reports of Gazans fleeing their homes in response to the allegations and a ripple of panic and fear spreading through the community. Jihad Khelles, a pro-Hamas preacher from Gaza, also tweeted that it became evident that there was no proven evidence for the events and that the ‘witness’ told a story that she had heard and not witnessed, also adding that “this creates panic and fear” and “makes [Palestinians] feel despair and frustration at a time when we are most in need for stability and reassurance.”
Israeli authorities responded to the allegations with indignation and were quick to denounce them. The IDF’s Arabic spokesperson, Lt. Col. Avichai Adraee, refuted the claims in a video message, accusing Al Jazeera and Hamas media outlets of spreading lies. Foreign Minister Israel Katz echoed this sentiment, stating, “Look surprised, the Palestinians fabricate stories of rape to incite antisemitism,” and addressing the UN Secretary-General Antonio Gutteres with the assertion that this is the regrettable reality.
