NBA’s Chris Paul Ejected After Taunting Referee Tony Brothers with ‘TikToker’ Jibe

    Published on

In a 123-111 defeat against the Indiana Pacers on Friday, the Golden State Warriors’ guard Chris Paul was ejected in the closing moments of the game for receiving two rapid technical fouls.

Initially, Paul was given a technical foul on the defensive end of the court with 22.6 seconds remaining. The 38-year-old player then exited the court with 6.6 seconds left.

After the game, Paul revealed that he had referred to the official Tony Brothers as a “TikToker” to elicit the first technical, and then criticized Brothers for wielding excessive power, leading to the second technical foul.

“Old Tony. He talking to me, I talked back. I called him a TikToker, and I got a tech. It was the first one. I just said, ‘TikToker,’ gave me a tech. Second one, I just said that’s too much powers. He gave me another tech,” Paul shared during the post-game conference.

Further fueling the incident, Paul took to social media posting a clip of Brothers from a previous interview on his Instagram story. Brothers’ own words, “I don’t even really care too much for basketball,” were juxtaposed with his role as referee and his admittance of aspiring to be a judge rather than engaging with the sport he officiates.

The Warriors’ recent form has been up and down, and this match was no exception. They currently have a 36-33 record, sitting precariously in 10th place in the Western Conference standings, with a narrow advantage over the resurgent Houston Rockets for the last play-in position. The Warriors are under pressure to secure a strong end to the regular season.

Chris Paul’s ejection marks his eighth in a career spanning 19 years, underscoring the occasional but intense clashes that can occur between NBA players and referees. Paul, a 12-time All-Star, contributed 12 points, six rebounds, and four assists off the bench before his ejection. With the Warriors’ home record now at a concerning 18-19, the team faces a pivotal five-game road trip that could dictate their playoff fate.
