German Parents Express Regret Over Parenthood: A Deep Dive into YouGov’s Study on Parental Remorse

    Published on

In a revelation that may surprise some and resonate with others, a YouGov study has unveiled a complex and often hidden sentiment among German parents: one in five regrets having children. This statistic offers a stark look into the emotional and practical struggles of parenthood in a society where the realities of raising children can clash with individual expectations and societal ideals.

The YouGov survey polled 2,045 parents in Germany, unearthing that 19% of mothers and 20% of fathers, if given the chance to go back, would opt to live without children. These figures suggest a critical juncture in societal norms and expectations surrounding parenthood and individual fulfillment. YouGov spokesman and trained psychologist Holger Geissler describes the percentage as “critical,” indicating a need for a broader societal and political conversation.

The paradox of parenting joy versus regret is captured in the words of one mother, “Today, I really regret bringing a child into the world,” yet she also considers her child “the greatest gift I’ve ever been given.” It’s a sentiment that underscores the layered experiences of parents, who can feel a profound love for their children while simultaneously grappling with the limitations and sacrifices parenthood imposes on their lives.

The sense of limitation is not a fringe feeling; 52% of the parents surveyed acknowledged moments when their lives felt restricted by their role as caregivers. This sentiment is further echoed in the lack of childcare options, as 64% of parents indicated that Germany needs more. Geissler points out a direct correlation: “The more childcare possibilities the parents have, the less they regret having a child.”

Career fulfillment is another facet of this complex issue. A significant number of mothers (44%) believed their professional lives would have been more successful without the responsibilities of parenthood, a sentiment shared by 20% of fathers. These figures highlight an ongoing struggle for work-life balance and the need for supportive policies that allow parents to thrive professionally without sacrificing their roles at home.

Despite the challenges, a substantial majority (77%) still find parenthood rewarding, and an overwhelming 95% express love for their children. But love does not preclude critical reflection, as even Geissler, a father himself, underscores the need for political action, especially in a country with a declining birth rate- “because if 20 percent of the parents then say that they regret it, where is this heading?”

The tension between personal aspirations and parental duties is not isolated to Germany. Similar studies in the UK and the US show that parental regret, although taboo, is a subject gaining more visibility and discussion. The narrative is slowly shifting from a one-size-fits-all idealization of parenthood to a more nuanced understanding that acknowledges the diverse experiences and choices of individuals.

“It makes sense to think carefully beforehand about what it means to have a child,”  Geissler said, adding that men in particular don’t realize how much their position within the family will change – as might their sex lives: “I suspect that’s one aspect of why fathers subsequently regret becoming a father.”
