Known as Florida’s flagship bridge, it is a vital conduit, connecting St. Petersburg to Terra Ceia and overseeing the bustling shipping lanes of Lower Tampa Bay. But behind its bright yellow cables and sleek silhouette lies a history punctuated by catastrophic events, the most notable occurring on May 9, 1980, when the freighter MV Summit Venture collided with the bridge in a fierce squall, sending a 1,200-foot section of the roadway into the bay and claiming 35 lives.
The aftermath of that day led to a radical rethinking of bridge safety. The Florida Department of Transportation, just days after the tragedy, began construction on a new, safer Sunshine Skyway Bridge, which was completed in 1987. The reconstructed bridge wasn’t just a replacement; it was an upgrade, a fortified structure ready to withstand the forces that had brought its predecessor to ruin.
