First discovered by an international team of 15 biologists in February, Ana Julia was a recent biological marvel, weighing approximately 440 pounds and measuring over 26 feet in length. Biologist Professor Freek Vonk, who was part of the team that discovered Ana Julia, shared his anguish on Instagram: “With a lot of pain in my heart, I would like to let you know that the mighty big anaconda I swam with was found dead in the river.” This loss has not just saddened the researchers and conservationists but has potentially severe repercussions on the local ecology. Ana Julia was in her reproductive prime and could have contributed significantly to the survival of her species.

The scientific community has been quick to dispel confusion over Ana Julia’s species. She was not the recently discovered Northern Green Anaconda, which is considered to be a new species due to significant DNA differences, but rather a member of the well-known Southern Green Anaconda species.

Her death, particularly if caused by human action, is being viewed as a reflection of the pressing need to protect the Amazon’s wildlife against illegal hunting and habitat destruction.
