Zelensky Appeals to US Congress for Immediate Military Aid to Avert Ukrainian Withdrawal

    Published on

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a stark call to the US Congress, urging the passage of a critical military aid package to prevent the retreat of Ukrainian forces in the face of Russian aggression. As tensions mount on the Eastern European frontlines, the stability and integrity of Ukraine’s defense effort hinge on support from the United States.

Zelensky’s appeal came as he highlighted the dire consequences of inaction, detailing the urgent need for air defense systems, Patriot missiles, electronic warfare jammers, and 155-millimeter artillery rounds. “If there is no US support, it means that we have no air defense, no Patriot missiles, no jammers for electronic warfare, no 155-millimeter artillery rounds,” Zelensky told The Washington Post. “It means we will go back, retreat, step by step, in small steps.”

The US administration, led by President Joe Biden, faces a Congressional logjam where a significant international aid package of $95 billion, which includes $60 billion for Ukraine, has stalled. This delay has placed Ukraine in a precarious position, unable to advance and compelled to consider measures to ration resources. Zelensky warned that diminishing munitions could lead to a shortening of the frontline, a move that may result in more extensive Russian encroachments upon major Ukrainian cities.

Zelensky’s concerns resonate with the realities on the ground as Russia intensifies assaults on Ukraine’s border settlements. “If you need 8,000 rounds a day to defend the front line, but you only have, for example, 2,000 rounds, you have to do less,” Zelensky said, indicating the stark choices facing Kyiv.

The prospects for the aid bill remain uncertain, with Republicans pushing for a loan program and Democrats wary of additional conditions. Nevertheless, House Speaker Mike Johnson has expressed some openness to a bipartisan approach, promising to revisit the issue after the Easter recess.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s commander-in-chief, Oleksandr Syrsky, has depicted a grim picture of the frontlines, with Russian forces outmatching Ukrainian troops, leading to losses of both life and territory. The imbalance in firepower is acute, with Syrsky reporting a six to one ammunition disparity favoring the Russians. “The defense forces are now performing tasks along the entire vast frontline, with little or no weapons and ammunition,” Syrsky said.

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has joined the chorus of voices urging Congress to pass the aid bill, emphasizing the necessity of US support for Ukrainian defense against Russia. As both military leaders and politicians make their case, Ukraine’s position grows more precarious with each passing day.

The President of Ukraine made it unequivocally clear that the nation’s ability to conduct a counteroffensive later this year, to train new brigades, and to arm its forces adequately, all depend on the decisions made by the US Congress. With Russian forces already having established significant footholds in Eastern Ukraine, Zelensky’s government scrambles to prevent any further retreats. “We are trying to find some way not to retreat,” Zelensky said, underscoring the urgency of receiving aid.
