Serendipity in Action: Anthony Hopkins and the Astonishing Tale of a Lost Manuscript

    Published on

Imagine strolling through London, searching for a book to help you with an upcoming role, only to find not just any copy, but the author’s own annotated manuscript, abandoned on a park bench. For esteemed actor Anthony Hopkins, this wasn’t a plot from one of his movies; it was reality. In a remarkable twist of fate, Hopkins’ quest to find “The Girl from Petrovka,” a novel he needed for his role in the film adaptation, concluded with him discovering the stolen, annotated manuscript of the book’s author, George Feifer, an event that adds a layer of mystique to an already extraordinary career.

Hopkins had set his sights on the role in “The Girl from Petrovka” as a career turning point. He needed the novel for his research but was unable to procure a copy in the UK. Then, as if scripted by destiny itself, he stumbled upon the lost manuscript, complete with editorial notes—practically a personalized guide for his preparation. This stroke of serendipity didn’t just gift Hopkins with the book; it became a catalyst for a career-defining moment that saw him transcend from respected stage actor to Hollywood luminary.

Hopkins embarked on a journey to Vienna a year after discovering the manuscript, with the intention of commencing the filming of the feature. It was during this time that he had the opportunity to meet the author, George Feifer. Feifer had traveled to Vienna to write an article about the experience of witnessing his novel being adapted into a cinematic masterpiece. Despite his reserved nature, Feifer found the film set environment to be quite overpowering, causing him to retreat backstage. It was there that he coincidentally encountered Hopkins, who was also exploring the backstage area. Being his usual amiable self, Hopkins managed to alleviate Feifer’s unease and make him feel more comfortable.

Feifer clarified that he was the author responsible for the story, while Hopkins playfully expressed his frustration regarding the challenges he faced in obtaining a copy of his book in the UK market. Feifer offered his apologies and took responsibility for the significant time gap between the publication of the book in the US and the UK. During his time in London, when he was editing the manuscript, he reluctantly lent his friend a copy with his annotations. However, this casual companion carelessly tossed the manuscript onto the backseat of his car and parked it on Hyde Park Square.

Regrettably, his car was stolen… along with the manuscript. While Feifer recounted the unfortunate incident, Hopkins swiftly turned, dashed to his dressing room, and emerged with the very manuscript he stumbled upon months earlier on a bench. “Could this document hold any significance for you?” Feifer remembers Hopkins inquiring as he handed over a familiar-looking bundle of papers. Naturally, had Feifer simply denied any knowledge of it, as the title of this piece implies, Hopkins would not have found himself at the heart of a quantum theory. Interestingly, the thieves had taken Feifer’s friend’s car, driven it three miles across London, and then abandoned the damning book at the train station… just moments before Hopkins discovered that the book was unavailable in the UK, crushing his Hollywood dreams. Alas, this quirk of fate ensured that Hopkins’ career in Hollywood would take off.

This fascinating encounter resonates with the themes of synchronicity, a concept discussed in Arthur Koestler’s “The Roots of Coincidence,” which explores the possibility of meaningfully related events that lack an apparent causal link. Koestler’s work, inspired by the Hopkins and Feifer tale, delves into the idea that the universe might not be as chaotic as it seems. Hopkins himself became an unwitting muse for the thesis, demonstrating how life can imitate art in the most unexpected ways.

The story of Hopkins and the manuscript doesn’t just stand as a testimony to strange coincidences. It also illustrates the ripples of inspiration that can emanate from a single event. Koestler’s book on synchronicity, inspired by this remarkable episode, would go on to influence the musical world when it became the namesake for The Police’s final album. And, in a return to the starting point, Hopkins would eventually find himself cast in a film related to the very bookstore he’d been turned away from all those years ago—a poetic full circle that only reality could script.

As Hopkins’ fame burgeoned, this story of coincidence served as a reminder of the intricacies of fate. It’s a tale that has enthralled readers and challenged our understanding of random chance. For Hopkins, it was not only the acquisition of a critical prop for his work but also a fortuitous turn in the narrative of his own life. In finding the lost manuscript, he found a pivotal step toward the spotlight, reminding us all that sometimes, the universe conspires to write stories more compelling than fiction.
