The recent attempts by Russian forces to cross the Dnipro River and seize control of the eastern bank have resulted in a strategic withdrawal following significant losses. Ukraine’s Southern Defense Forces detailed the failed assaults in a statement, indicating that the enemy, notably not deploying armored vehicles, retreated after suffering considerable casualties.
The situation on the ground has been intense, with Ukraine’s military stating that Russian reconnaissance troops attempting to cross the Dnipro in Kherson Oblast were met with robust resistance. The Southern Operational Command reported, “Under heavy fire from the defense forces, the occupying boat magically repeated the fate of the Russian fleet – having lost a quarter of its capacity and fullness, it retreated to the left bank again.” These failed attempts come amid a series of fierce confrontations along the river where Ukrainian forces have steadfastly held their positions for several months.
The Russian offensive has not been without cost to their equipment and personnel. Reports indicate that within the last 24 hours, the enemy lost 50 pieces of weapons and military equipment in the Orikhiv and Kherson sectors. These losses included two tanks, 13 artillery systems, and a reconnaissance drone, among others. Additionally, Ukrainian forces succeeded in destroying four field military supply points and a checkpoint, with some 141 Russian soldiers killed in action in the two sectors.
This withdrawal is not an isolated incident but part of a broader pattern of failed assaults by Russian forces. The Ukrainian military’s capability to hold their lines, despite the challenges posed by drone attacks and artillery strikes, exemplifies the resilience and strategic positioning of their defense. Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, acknowledged the rotation of troops who have been fighting “for a long time,” which, as he mentioned, “will allow us to stabilize the situation and positively affect the moral and psychological state of our soldiers.”
Despite the Russian troop intensification in the Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk sectors, the Southern Operational Command has kept up its defenses along the right bank of the Dnipro River, repelling and inflicting heavy losses on Russian forces. These operational setbacks for Russia have coincided with internal challenges, such as the reported execution of Russian soldiers for disobedience, as stated by John Kirby of the US National Security Council.
The strategic significance of these failed river crossings cannot be overstated. The Dnipro River serves as a critical geographic barrier in the conflict, and the ability of Ukrainian forces to repulse assaults and maintain their strongholds is a testament to their operational effectiveness and tenacity in the face of a numerically superior adversary.
The retreat across the Dnipro underscores a fundamental challenge Russia faces in Ukraine: sustaining and advancing its offensive under the constant pressure of a determined and well-coordinated Ukrainian defense.
