In a sentencing appeal that resonates with the gravity of the tragedy it follows, prosecutors are recommending that a Michigan judge impose a prison sentence of 10 to 15 years for James and Jennifer Crumbley, whose son Ethan carried out a deadly school shooting at Oxford High School. The sentencing recommendations come with a stark indictment of the parents’ actions and attitudes since their convictions for involuntary manslaughter.
James and Jennifer Crumbley were found guilty in separate trials of four counts of involuntary manslaughter, each count representing one of the students their son fatally shot on November 30, 2021. Prosecutors are urging that the severity of their negligence and their subsequent “chilling lack of remorse” be met with substantial prison time.
In court documents released to the public, prosecutors allege that James Crumbley has made repeated threats against the Prosecuting Attorney Karen McDonald, including saying “there will be retribution,” and has expressed a desire for martyrdom rather than contrition. “His jail calls show a total lack of remorse, he blames everyone but himself, and he threatened the elected Prosecutor,” the memorandum for James Crumbley stated. James Crumbley wrote, “I feel absolutely horrible/am (devastated) for what happened,” but also claimed, “I am wrongly accused, and now wrongly convicted of Involuntary Manslaughter.” Jennifer Crumbley, for her part, attempted to clarify her previous testimony where she stated she would not have done anything differently, claiming that with hindsight, her response “would be hugely different.”
The prosecution’s memorandums reflect a sharp rebuke to these statements, highlighting the parents’ failure to take “tragically simple actions” that could have prevented the shooting.
