Fox News rejects White House demands to retract stories on Easter Egg roll controversy. White House officials contacted Fox News editorial leaders, including digital chief Porter Berry, to remove a story claiming the Biden White House banned religious-themed designs from Easter egg art contest.
The crux of the controversy revolves around a flyer for the “2024 Call for Youth Art,” which stipulates that egg design submissions for the event should avoid “any questionable content, religious symbols, overtly religious themes,” or partisan political statements. While this clause has been a long-established rule since the 1970s, employed by administrations of both political affiliations, its recent portrayal by some outlets sparked accusations of a novel ban under the Biden White House.
The narrative gained traction, prompting the White House to reach out to editorial leaders at Fox News, including digital chief Porter Berry, urging a retraction of the story. The pushback from the administration was vigorous enough to see some outlets modify their coverage, with The Daily Caller notably retracting its story after recognizing “additional context that undercut the central assertion of this article and its newsworthiness.”
However, Fox News has resisted the White House’s appeals for correction. A spokesperson for the network confirmed their position, emphasizing that their reporting accurately reflected the language of the aforementioned flyer and that their story included comments from the American Egg Board President clarifying the longstanding nature of these guidelines.
In its response to the White House, a Fox News spokesperson underscored the factual basis for their reporting: “We stand by our reporting as it accurately quotes the ‘2024 Call for Youth Art’ flyer which states Easter egg design submissions ‘must not include any questionable content, religious symbols, overtly religious themes.’”
Further complicating the issue are explanations from Emily Metz, President and CEO of the American Egg Board, who, after the publication of the contentious Fox News article, outlined the neutral stance required in their promotional efforts due to strict USDA guidelines. Metz noted, “We all have to follow kind of guidelines… We can’t discriminate on the basis of race, religion, sex, sexual identity, any of that.”
The dynamic between the White House and Fox News has been notably strained, with frequent points of contention arising from coverage that the administration deems misrepresentative or inaccurate. This latest dispute over Easter egg decor is emblematic of the ongoing tug-of-war over narratives between the two entities.
In a landscape where media accountability and the fight against misinformation are ever more salient, the White House has pointedly applauded The Daily Caller for its willingness to retract and correct its coverage. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre lauded the outlet’s decision, stating, “It’s important to acknowledge when a mistake has been made and take responsibility for it.”
