McDonald’s to Take Back Israeli Franchises Amidst Boycotts Over IDF Support

    Published on

McDonald’s Corp has decided to repurchase all of its Israeli restaurants, a total of 225 locations currently run by franchisee Alonyal Ltd, in response to regional boycotts which have negatively impacted sales. The fast-food giant faced a backlash following Alonyal’s initiative to donate thousands of free meals to Israeli soldiers amidst the recent Israel-Hamas conflict. This decision comes as McDonald’s tries to reassert control and maintain its market commitment in a region that collectively employs over 5,000 individuals.

Boycotts and protests erupted in response to the perceived support for Israel by the fast-food chain, particularly in Muslim-majority nations such as Kuwait, Malaysia, and Pakistan. The boycott, which extended beyond the Middle East, led to McDonald’s experiencing a quarterly sales miss for the first time in nearly four years. The boycott was described as “disheartening and ill-founded” by McDonald’s. The company relies on thousands of independent businesses to own and operate most of its more than 40,000 stores around the world. About 5% are located in the Middle East.

Jo Sempels, the President of International Developmental Licensed Markets at McDonald’s, stated, “McDonald’s remains committed to the Israeli market and to ensuring a positive employee and customer experience in the market going forward.” This echoes the company’s attempts to stabilize the situation and its resolve to deliver a consistent customer experience amidst the challenges.

Omri Padan, the CEO and owner of Alonyal, reflected on the long-term partnership with McDonald’s saying, “For more than 30 years, Alonyal Limited has been proud to bring the Golden Arches to Israel and serve our communities. We’ve grown the brand to be the leading and most successful restaurant chain in Israel and are grateful to our management, employees, suppliers, and customers who made this possible. We are encouraged by what the future holds.”

The repurchase move is a strategic one, as evidenced by the emphasis on maintaining a “positive employee and customer experience.” By regaining direct control over its Israeli locations, McDonald’s appears to be taking a step to mitigate the fallout from recent geopolitical tensions and boycotts.

      • Please clarify. Are you boycotting McDonalds because its franchisee in Israel offered free meals to support his country’s military (the orders to which you might not like), or because McDonalds gave in to a regional boycott effort by buying out its Israeli franchisee and (presumably) ceasing such support to the military there?
