A Russian missile ship, the Serpukhov, stationed at the Baltiysk Naval Base in the Kaliningrad region, was reported to have been heavily damaged by a fire on April 7, as a result of an operation by Ukrainian military intelligence (HUR), sources from the intelligence community claimed. The region of Kaliningrad is a strategically significant area, nestled between Poland and Lithuania, and the incident marks a significant operation beyond Ukraine’s borders.
According to a Kyiv Post source within Ukrainian intelligence, the fire inflicted on the Serpukhov, a Project 21631 Buyan-M small missile ship, signifies that “repairs will take a long time,” although the extent of casualties, if any, was yet to be clarified at the time of reporting. The source added that the vessel itself was “not well.”
These assertions were further bolstered by a statement on the HUR’s Telegram channel, which claimed responsibility for the incident and declared that due to the fire, “its means of communication and automation were completely destroyed.” The Serpukhov is known for its stealth technology and capability to launch Kalibr or Oniks anti-ship cruise missiles, which have been employed in Russia’s operations against Ukraine.
This is not the first instance where Ukrainian intelligence has been credited with targeting Russian naval capabilities. A prior operation by HUR reportedly hit and heavily damaged the Russian Project 22160 patrol ship Sergey Kotov near the Kerch Strait on the night of March 5.
The incident’s strategic implications are noteworthy, considering Kaliningrad’s role in the Baltic Sea region, where tensions between Russia and NATO have escalated, especially after the alliance’s expansion to include Sweden and Finland following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The Baltic Sea, as per allied officials quoted by Newsweek, can now be considered a “NATO Lake,” indicating a strategic advantage for the Western alliance in the region.
The Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine (HUR) was also behind that special operation, according to a source from Ukrainian intelligence. These reports have not been independently verified yet, and Newsweek has contacted the Russian and Ukrainian defense ministries for a response. If confirmed, these claims of a successful Ukrainian operation in Russian territory would be a bold and significant move, but the lack of independent verification requires careful interpretation.
