Global Tensions and Nuclear Alerts: The Heightened Risk of Nuclear Conflict Amidst Modernizing Arsenals

    Published on

The specter of nuclear warfare, once a distant cold war memory, has resurfaced with unsettling prominence in the current global landscape. As the international community grapples with the disturbing reality that nine countries, including superpowers such as the United States and Russia, possess close to 13,000 nuclear weapons, the perilous state of global security demands our immediate attention.

In the midst of the shadows of the Ukraine conflict, the world was reminded of this grim reality on March 25, 2023 when the Russian Federation announced plans to station non-strategic nuclear weapons in Belarus. This move, decried as “nuclear sharing” by Izumi Nakamitsu, the Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, marked a chilling first since the inception of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons in 1970. The situation starkly echoes an era when the risk of nuclear weapons use was at its peak since the cold war’s darkest days.

The United States lambasted the notion that Russia’s deployment was a justified act, calling it “ludicrous” and a manipulation of nuclear conflict’s specter to further its aims in Ukraine. Japan, bearing the scars of nuclear tragedy, staunchly condemned Russia’s actions and reaffirmed its commitment to leading international disarmament efforts. The Russian Federation and Belarus defended their decisions, with the former citing a degradation of global security architecture due to actions by Western nations and the latter stressing defensive measures in response to sanctions.

In the broader context, the global arsenal paints a worrying picture of increasing stockpiles and modernization endeavors, with the U.S. and Russia accounting for over 90% of these armaments. The U.S. maintains about 5,400 nuclear weapons, nearly half on high alert, ready to launch at a moment’s notice. Russia’s arsenal of roughly 6,000 warheads, combined with the U.S., forms an overwhelming majority of the world’s nuclear armaments.

The timeline of nuclear proliferation reveals a history rife with tension and rivalry. From the first atomic bombs dropped on Japan to the present, the evolution of these weapons has seen advancements in miniaturization, delivery systems, and tactical use, amplifying their destructive potential and the ease with which they can be deployed. These escalating tensions and the concurrent arms race are contrary to the spirit of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, as nations seemingly prepare to maintain large arsenals indefinitely.

The destructive capabilities of US weapons vary significantly. The most potent weapon, the B83 gravity bomb, surpasses the bomb dropped on Hiroshima by over 80 times in strength. On the other end, the smallest weapon yields just 2 percent of that power. These “low-yield” weapons are crafted for increased usability, raising the chances of their actual deployment.

Modern nuclear warheads have seen substantial progress in design, technology, and destructive potential. Notably, contemporary warheads mainly consist of thermonuclear bombs, or hydrogen (H) bombs, utilizing fusion and fission reactions to unleash higher energy levels – ranging from tens of kilotons to several megatons TNT equivalent, significantly surpassing the early atomic bombs in power.
