The Complicated Legacy of OJ Simpson: A Muted Response to His Passing

    Published on

The death of OJ Simpson, a figure whose life and trials have been etched deeply into the American cultural landscape, has elicited a notably reserved set of reactions, highlighting the complexities surrounding his legacy. Despite his stardom on the football field and in Hollywood, the tributes to the late NFL great and actor have been sparse and tinged with the memory of his highly publicized legal battles and the crimes he was associated with.

Simpson’s passing was confirmed by his family on his social media account, stating, “On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace.” However, as the news broke, the lack of grand public mourning or memorialization underscored how his celebrity status had been irrevocably marred by controversy and criminal allegations.

David Zucker, who directed Simpson in two “Naked Gun” movies, echoed the sentiments of many when he quipped on Instagram, “R.I.P. Nordberg. ‘His acting was a lot like his murdering: He got away with it, but no one believed him.'” This harsh statement was a reference to the infamous murder charges Simpson faced in June 12, 1994 for the deaths of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman, for which he was acquitted in 1995 in criminal court but found liable in a subsequent civil trial, and ordered to pay $33,500,000 in damages to be divided between the Goldman and Brown families.

Fred Goldman, Ron Goldman’s father, spoke to NBC News with a sobering perspective, stating, “The only thing I have to say is it’s just further reminder of Ron being gone all these years. It’s no great loss to the world. It’s a further reminder of Ron’s being gone.”

In stark contrast to the subdued and critical responses, certain sports figures chose to remember Simpson for his athletic prowess. The Official Heisman Trophy account paid respect to Simpson as the 1968 winner, and Magic Johnson offered prayers for Simpson’s family during this difficult time. Pro Football Hall of Fame President Jim Porter acknowledged Simpson’s groundbreaking achievement in the sport, stating, “His on-field contributions will be preserved in the hall’s archives in Canton, Ohio.”

A hope persists that the settling of Simpson’s estate might yield some long-awaited compensation for the Brown and Goldman families. David Cook, an attorney for the Goldman family, said in a statement to The Associated Press, “He died without penance. We don’t know what he has, where it is or who is in control. We will pick up where we are and keep going with it.”
