Rep. Byron Donalds Champions Acquittal in Trump’s Hush Money Trial, Echoing GOP’s Defiant Stance

    Published on

In a bold public appeal on Newsmax, Byron Donalds has called upon potential Manhattan jurors to acquit former President Donald Trump in his upcoming hush money trial. Donalds’ plea comes amid the looming start of the controversial trial. Trump is accused of using ex-lawyer Michael Cohen to silence an alleged affair with adult film actress Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 election.

“My plea is to the people of Manhattan that may sit on this trial: Please do the right thing for this country,” Donalds implored. “Everybody’s allowed to have their political viewpoints, but the law is supposed to be blind and no respecter of persons. This is a trash case, there is no crime here, and if there is any potential for a verdict, they should vote not guilty.”

Donalds’ stance reflects a broader sentiment within the GOP, with many Republicans dismissing the numerous legal challenges facing Trump, including 91 criminal charges. According to The Daily Beast, just one in 20 interviewed GOP lawmakers showed concern with the possibility that their nominee for the White House could be a convicted felon, instead referring to the proceedings as “frivolous.”

Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio expressed his discomfort with the “weaponized justice system,” while Senator Mitt Romney, a known Trump critic, predicted that even if convicted, Trump’s followers would remain unfazed.

Trump himself has lambasted the trial proceedings, decrying them as a witch hunt and election interference meant to drain his campaign resources and keep him from focusing on the 2024 Presidential Election campaign trail. He criticized the expanded gag order in a post on Truth Social, accusing Merchan of being corrupt.

Trump faces 34 felony charges for allegedly falsifying business records to further an underlying crime. The case’s outcome remains uncertain, but the GOP’s allegiance to Trump does not waver, even as some Republicans, have emphasized they were supporting Trump even if he is a convicted felon.

The trial continues amid a cacophony of support, dismissal, and critique of the judicial system from various corners of the Republican Party, and as Byron Donalds’ comments make clear, the GOP is all-in on Trump—a conviction be damned.
