Trump Shifts Gears on ACA: Promises Revamp Instead of Repeal, Drawing Scrutiny

    Published on

Former President Donald Trump has made a significant policy pivot from his earlier calls to dismantle the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare. In a video that has recently gone viral, Trump is seen asserting a promise to terminate the ACA, a stance he has vocally supported since his 2016 campaign. However, this position seems to have been tempered with his latest remarks indicating a departure from outright repeal to a promise of reform.

Trump, who is presumed to be the Republican nominee for the 2024 presidential election, had attempted to undermine the ACA shortly after his inauguration but was met with resistance within his own party. Despite these efforts, and the consistent legal challenges that ultimately did not succeed in the Supreme Court, the former president has recently endorsed the ACA on his social media platform, Truth Social. “I’m not running to terminate the ACA,” Trump wrote, blaming President Joe Biden for misinforming the public on his intentions. Instead, he claims he would “make the ACA, or OBAMACARE, AS IT IS KNOWN, MUCH BETTER, STRONGER, AND FAR LESS EXPENSIVE.”

This new position aligns with Trump’s broader campaign focus on border security, curbing inflation, enhancing the economy, fortifying the military, and healthcare reform. In doing so, he has accused the Biden administration of having a detrimental impact on American citizens through rising inflation, a weak economy, and various other challenges.

The Biden campaign has been quick to respond to Trump’s shifted stance. President Biden, on his social media platform, has warned that Trump was once close to repealing the ACA and now appears determined to try again under the guise of improvement. The president emphasized Trump’s past actions, suggesting he also aimed to cut Medicare and Social Security—claims that Trump’s campaign has previously denied.

This reversal comes after Trump has consistently criticized Obamacare as “not good healthcare,” vowing to replace it with an alternative program. However, specifics on how he would actually enhance the ACA remain scant. During his presidency, Trump’s administration did enact several changes to the health care law that critics argue undermined its effectiveness, including shortening the enrollment period and promoting alternative policies with fewer protections. Trump’s failure to repeal the ACA and his administration’s inability to introduce a comprehensive replacement have been sources of criticism.

Trump’s current promise to improve the ACA has raised eyebrows among Democrats and health policy experts who have previously witnessed his administration’s attempts to dismantle the law. As of now, the ACA has grown in popularity, with 45 million people currently covered through the Obamacare exchanges or Medicaid expansion—a record number as per the Biden administration.

The viral video montage of Trump’s past promises to repeal the ACA, with over 225,000 views, is likely to be a key focus of the election campaign.
