As the TCM Classic Film Festival rolled out the red carpet, marking its 15th year, it did so with a significant cinematic milestone: the 30th anniversary of Quentin Tarantino’s groundbreaking film, “Pulp Fiction.” While the renowned director wasn’t physically present, as stars Samuel L. Jackson, John Travolta, Uma Thurman, and Harvey Keitel took to the stage for a celebratory reunion that was much more than a nostalgic trip down memory lane.
The festival, known for its dedication to classic cinema, honored “Pulp Fiction” with a 35mm screening—an apt choice for a film that not only won the 1994 Palme d’Or but also catapulted Tarantino to his first Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. The film’s actors, each having carved their paths more deeply into Hollywood’s bedrock because of their involvement in the movie, shared their experiences and the impact Tarantino had on their careers.
In the absence of the filmmaker, Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz likened “Pulp Fiction” to such titans as “Gone with the Wind” and “Lawrence of Arabia,” noting its role in expanding Hollywood’s cinematic lexicon. However, the reunion panel soon shifted to a broader discussion of Tarantino’s artistry and the indelible mark he has made on pop culture.
Samuel L. Jackson vividly recounted his initial encounter with Tarantino’s work, reminiscing about his audition for “Reservoir Dogs” and his eventual awe upon reading the “Pulp Fiction” script. “When I read that script, I was like ‘This is amazing’,” Jackson shared, highlighting the rarity of such dialogue-heavy roles that resonated with his theater background.
John Travolta, lauding Tarantino’s writing as “undeniably articulate,” also praised the director’s unique ability to steer actors through the rhythm of his prose. He reflected on Tarantino’s guidance on delivery, “Just like with Tennessee Williams or any great writer, the writing always works, but the writer might have a personal, subjective idea of how things should be said. I like that kind of direction.”
Uma Thurman mused on the film’s transformative effect, not just personally but on the industry as a whole, saying, “It changed cinema. I feel like I’ve had an evolving and beautiful and growing relationship with ‘Pulp Fiction’ throughout my life.”
It was a sentiment echoed throughout the evening. Travolta acknowledged the second chapter “Pulp Fiction” wrote in his career, rocketing him to a stratosphere of opportunities that an actor could only dream of, while Jackson cited it as the turning point that made him “the coolest motherfucker alive.”
Beyond personal reflections, the night was peppered with laughter and camaraderie as the actors shared amusing behind-the-scenes anecdotes. Keitel joked about Tarantino raiding his fridge during their early discussions about “Reservoir Dogs,” and Travolta revealed Tarantino’s quirky request to play the “Welcome Back, Kotter” board game during their first meeting.
Notably, the festival’s commemorative event wasn’t limited to the panelists. The auditorium brimmed with other cast members, as well as producer Lawrence Bender and executive producers Stacey Sher and Michael Shamberg.
