The Kommuna was launched in 1915 and is the oldest ship still in service in the Russian Navy.In the shadow of an intensifying conflict, Ukraine’s Navy has confirmed that the Russian ship Kommuna was hit in Sevastopol, adding a significant naval dimension to the ongoing strife. This incident, dated April 21, marks an escalation within a series of offensive actions and casualties that have punctuated the conflict since February 2022.
Earlier in the day, the Russian proxy official Mikhail Razvozhayev claimed an anti-ship missile had been “repelled” in occupied Sevastopol and that “fragments caused a small fire, which was quickly extinguished.
Sevastopol is home to Russia’s Black Sea Fleet and is frequently targeted by Ukrainian missile and sea drone strikes.Russia withdrew most of its major ships from ports in occupied Crimea after successful Ukrainian strikes. The assault on the Russian Black Sea Fleet espressed the increasing tensions in the region. Reports suggest a missile was targeted at Russian naval vessels in the annexed city.
However, the land conflict remains unabated with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg highlighting the disparity in firepower facing Ukrainian forces. “The Ukrainians have now, for months, been outgunned, roughly one to five, one to ten, depending on what part of the front line you are talking about,” he stated. Concurrently, Ukraine’s air defense units are actively countering aerial threats, with reports of six drones being downed overnight.
The Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a U.S.-based think tank, suggests that Ukrainian forces might impede Russia’s expected summer offensive with timely U.S. military aid. This view echoes Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s emphasis on the vital role of U.S. assistance in enhancing Ukraine’s prospects for success.”I think this support will really strengthen the armed forces, I pray, and we will have a chance at victory if Ukraine really gets the weapons system, which we need so much, which thousands of soldiers need so much,” Zelensky stated.
The United States’ role continues to be pivotal, with Senator Mark Warner indicating the possible commencement of ATACMS transfers to Ukraine “by the end of the week.” This advanced weaponry could provide a significant boost to Ukrainian forces, enabling them to mount a robust defense and possibly alter the conflict’s trajectory. In the midst of these developments, Russia persists in its offensive, with attacks reported in various communities in the Sumy and Kherson Oblasts.
The broader scope of the conflict also reflects in the human toll, with the General Staff of Ukraine citing staggering Russian casualties exceeding 460,000 since the conflict’s inception. This figure includes a recent count of 730 Russian casualties in just a single day.
