Russia Condemns US Aid to Ukraine, Foresees ‘Humiliation’ akin to Vietnam and Afghanistan

    Published on

Russia has issued a stark condemnation of the latest US legislative move to approve a substantial aid package for Ukraine, comparing the American involvement to past military engagements in Vietnam and Afghanistan. Moscow’s response follows the US House of Representatives’ overwhelmingly bipartisan approval of a $95 billion aid package, which includes $60.84 billion for Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russian forces.

Russian officials, including Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, have criticized the US for deepening its involvement in what they term a “hybrid war” against Russia. Zakharova stated that Washington’s actions would result in a “loud and humiliating fiasco” for the United States, drawing historical parallels to previous American military interventions that ended in retreat. She further accused the US of using Ukrainians as “cannon fodder” and suggested that the American strategy had shifted from expecting a Ukrainian victory to merely prolonging the conflict.

President Vladimir Putin presents the war as part of a broader struggle with the United States, claiming Moscow’s interests were ignored post the 1991 Soviet collapse, leading to US attempts to destabilize Russia. This viewpoint contrasts sharply with Western leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who frame the conflict as a defense against Russian imperial aggression.

In contrast to Russian criticism, Western and Ukrainian leaders have lauded the aid package. President Zelensky expressed his gratitude on social media, emphasizing that US leadership is critical for maintaining global democracy and freedom. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and other European leaders hailed the House vote, considering the military aid to Ukraine as an investment in the security of NATO states.

The aid package, which also encompasses support for Israel and other countries, aims to bolster Ukraine’s military capabilities and assist with financial needs via loans. Ukrainian forces have faced significant ammunition shortages, which this aid is intended to address. On the ground, Ukrainian soldiers like Oleksandr, fighting near Avdiivka, underscore the importance of this support, stating it is “incredibly important” for defense and for reclaiming lost territory.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov warned of the consequences of the US’s decision to provide aid, suggesting it would lead to the economic enrichment of the United States at the expense of Ukraine’s ruin. Russian officials went further, with Peskov cautioning that the United States would have to answer for the confiscation of frozen Russian assets .

The Senate is now expected to review and potentially approve the aid, with President Joe Biden ready to sign it into law promptly. This legislative action signifies a critical juncture in US support for Ukraine, despite internal political contention and opposition from some Republican lawmakers.
