Investigations by various news organizations have unveiled that Israeli airstrikes have repeatedly hit regions in Gaza explicitly designated as safe zones, resulting in significant civilian casualties and raising concerns over the adherence to international laws and the safety of humanitarian efforts within conflict zones.
An NBC News inquiry into seven deadly airstrikes found Palestinians were killed in parts of southern Gaza that the Israeli military had designated as evacuation zones or safe areas. These strikes occurred from January to April, even after Israel’s military mapped out these regions online, advising civilians to seek refuge there. Despite these assurances, the aftermath of the airstrikes tells a very different story: bloody scenes, destruction, and the loss of innocent lives, including pregnant women and children.
The harrowing account of one survivor, Ahmed Younis, who lost 15 relatives in an attack on a home deemed safe, “Many of my cousins were killed,” one of the survivors, Ahmed Younis, told an NBC News crew in the immediate aftermath of the attack. Younis added that he had moved to the house believing it was safe “but there is no safe area. The house fell on our heads.”
Amid the turbulence, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) is investigating a disturbingly high number of journalist casualties, emphasizing that the Gaza-Israel war has become one of the deadliest conflicts for media workers since CPJ began its records. The grim statistics tally at least 97 journalists and media workers among the casualties, signifying not just a tragic loss of life but also a substantial blow to the free flow of information and the public’s right to know.
Another layer of the crisis is revealed by reports indicating that even when aid groups coordinated their operations with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), their humanitarian sites still came under fire. Despite a process known as deconfliction, intended to prevent such incidents, six Western-based aid groups found their efforts met with deadly consequences.
The most poignant of these occurrences involved the killing of seven World Central Kitchen workers after an Israeli drone targeted their convoy.
