President Joe Biden lambasted former President Donald Trump for commercializing faith by endorsing and profiting from the sales of a “God Bless the USA Bible,” turning a sharp critique into a broader condemnation of Trump’s role in the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. The comments were made during Biden’s campaign visit to Florida, where he attempted to connect the dots between Trump’s recent Bible endorsement and his abortion stance.
“He described the Dobbs decision as a miracle,” Biden said, referencing the pivotal Supreme Court case. “Maybe it’s coming from that Bible he’s trying to sell.” This quip sparked laughter in the crowd as Biden humorously considered purchasing one to “see what the hell’s in it.” The Bible, featuring the text of the U.S. Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and the lyrics to Lee Greenwood’s patriotic anthem, has been criticized for its quality, with reports of sticky pages and overall poor reviews.
“Folks, it was no miracle. It was a political deal … he made with the evangelical base of the Republican Party to look past his moral and character flaws in exchange for his commitment to appoint justices to the Supreme Court who would overturn Roe,” Biden stated.
Trump has been touting the Bibles since March, right before Easter, urging his followers to purchase them, claiming, “We must make America pray again.” Some critics view the sales as a commodification of religion, particularly during Holy Week, and even Trump’s conservative base raised eyebrows at the potential for turning the sacred into a sales product.
Biden’s stinging remarks extend beyond the issue of Bible sales to a broader narrative about the repercussions of Trump’s Supreme Court appointments. The conservative majority, which includes three justices appointed by Trump, played a central role in revoking federal abortion rights.
The President mentioned states “all over this country,” including Ohio, Kansas, Michigan, Kentucky, Wisconsin, and Virginia, where voters have opposed limits on reproductive freedom. “This November, you can add Florida to that list,” he urged, as he seeks to channel the fervor around abortion rights into voter turnout.
