Surge in GPS Jamming Incidents Over Eastern Europe Raises Safety Concerns for Civil Aviation

    Published on

In recent months, a disturbing phenomenon has swept across Eastern Europe’s skies, affecting thousands of flights: the jamming of GPS signals, an issue with significant implications for aviation safety. Reports indicate a worrying increase in such incidents, with over 46,000 flights experiencing navigation problems while flying over the region, particularly in the Baltic airspace. This surge has sparked concerns within the aviation community, with suspicion falling on Russia as the source of these disruptions.

The Sun, drawing on data from GPSJAM.org, highlighted the high number of incidents over the Baltics between August 2023 and March 2024. The reported disruptions likely stem from intentional interference with global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), known as jamming, and spoofing, where false satellite signals deceive receivers. According to The Guardian, these practices have the potential to render the GNSS “ineffective or degraded” or cause aircraft to compute incorrect position, navigation, and timing data, respectively.

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has expressed concern over the “sharp rise” in such attacks on GNSS, which have “increasingly threatened the integrity” of critical aviation services. This escalation coincides with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022 and has heightened tensions in the region. Although the jamming and spoofing seem to be more concentrated around conflict zones and areas of military activity, they are also experienced widely across parts of the Mediterranean, Black Sea, Baltic Sea, and the Arctic.

The impact on airlines has been significant. Ryanair and Wizz Air, two major budget carriers, reported more than 3,650 incidents combined in the Baltic region during the observed period. Notably, a Royal Air Force plane carrying the UK Defense Secretary experienced “temporary GPS jamming” when it flew near Kaliningrad, a Russian exclave.

Despite these challenges, airlines have been quick to reassure that safety remains uncompromised. The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) emphasized that GPS is just one part of the navigation system used by aircraft and that multiple systems are in place to ensure safe travel. For instance, a spokesperson from Ryanair stated, “all airlines” had encountered a rise in intermittent GPS interference in recent years, but their aircraft are equipped with multiple systems to determine location, and the crew could switch to an alternative method if necessary.

The rise in reported instances from fewer than 50 a week last year to more than 350 a week in recent months underscores a drastic change in the operating environment for airlines over Eastern Europe. While aviation officials do not believe the jamming is deliberately targeting foreign civilian aircraft, it does pose a safety risk that cannot be ignored.
