Slovak Citizens Step Up for Ukraine: $4 Million Funded for Czech Ammunition Project

    Published on

As the Ukrainian conflict continues to draw global attention, the citizens of Slovakia have taken a stand in solidarity with Ukraine, showcasing a remarkable demonstration of civil initiative. While the Slovak government declined to participate in a Czech-led effort to provide ammunition for Ukraine, Slovak citizens have independently raised nearly €4 million to support the cause.

The fundraising campaign began with a modest goal of €250,000, escalating rapidly due to widespread support, with over 60,000 contributors stepping in to fill the gap left by their government. The initiative, spurred by the citizens’ dissatisfaction with Prime Minister Robert Fico’s stance, has been a striking rebuke of the Slovak government’s refusal to join over twenty countries in the Czech ammunition project.

Earlier this year, Ukraine’s counteroffensive proved ineffective, as Russia continued to assert its dominance in artillery fire. Meanwhile, the United States’ aid to Kyiv was hindered by political complications in Washington. In response to these challenges, the Czech government established a platform to gather donations from allied countries. The purpose of this platform was to co-finance the purchase of ammunition from various producers worldwide. By doing so, the Czech government aimed to avoid criticism from certain EU countries, like France, which preferred to use public funds solely to support local ammunition stocks and generate billions for artillery.

Since then, numerous EU countries, including Germany and Belgium, as well as Canada and Norway, have shown their support by contributing to the Czech program. However, Fico’s government has taken a different stance, refusing to provide military assistance to Ukraine. The prime minister even went as far as claiming that Prague “has an interest in supporting the war in Ukraine.”

Prime Minister Fico’s administration has consistently pushed for Slovakia to halt military aid and resort to humanitarian aid only, with the prime minister controversially suggesting that Ukraine cede territory to Russia. Fico’s statements have drawn criticism from within and beyond Slovakia’s borders.

But the collective action of the Slovak people tells a different story. Zuzana Izsáková, co-organizer of the fundraising campaign, remarked, “We refuse to accept a refusal to aid our neighbour affected by war.” The sentiment reflects a resolute stance of support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and resistance, challenging the official government line.

The funds, initially hoped to reach €1 million, surpassed expectations and will be directed towards the Czech program for purchasing ammunition. The first delivery to Ukraine is expected in June, a gesture that not only aids Ukraine but also signifies a powerful message of grassroots defiance and unity.

The contrast between the government’s position and the will of the people is stark. While the Slovak government distances itself from the Czech ammunition initiative, Slovak citizens have embraced it, wielding the power of collective action to influence the international response to the conflict in Ukraine.
