Trump Holds Edge Over Biden in Latest Poll as America Gears Up for Potential Rematch

    Published on

With the campaign trails heating up and America bracing for another showdown, a new Reuters/Ipsos poll has U.S. former President Donald Trump marginally widening his lead over President Joe Biden as the country approaches the November presidential elections. The survey from CNN, indicated a 6-point advantage for Donald Trump among registered voters, with nearly half of voters saying they’re planning to place their support behind Trump this fall.

According to the survey released Sunday showed that 49% of registered voters would back Trump if the election were held today, compared to 43% for Biden. President Joe Biden has dropped two percentage points, down from 45% since CNN’s last poll in January.

This uptick for Biden comes amidst a backdrop of legal challenges facing Trump, who is set to appear in a Manhattan courtroom for the first of four pending criminal trials on April 15. The charges against Trump include accusations of covering up a payment to an adult film actress before the 2016 presidential election, with other trials involving attempts to overturn the 2020 election results and mishandling sensitive documents post-presidency. The weight of these legal troubles may indeed have a bearing on the electorate’s view, as the majority of Americans surveyed considered the charges serious.

The poll also reveals a demographic split, with Trump leading among respondents without a college degree, 23-year-old dog breeding business owner Isaiah Turner told Reuters, “I can’t think of anything Trump did while in power that upset me. And now with Biden in power there are countless things I disagree with. Many of my friends have the same opinion as me.” 19-year-old student Colin Kregg said, “the money spent overseas could be better used to address domestic issues, such as drug addiction. I really don’t like what we’re doing with Ukraine. When I hear him (referring to Trump) speak, he’s very patriotic, very ‘America First’ and I like that.” And Biden ahead among those who have a college degree. This division underscores the different appeal the candidates have across varying segments of society.

“I am, somewhere. I don’t know when,” the Democratic president said in an interview with broadcaster Howard Stern. “I’m happy to debate him.” Biden said he will participate in a debate with Republican opponent Donald Trump in the November election.
