As the courtroom drama unfolds in the trial of Donald Trump’s alleged hush money payments, Manhattan prosecutors are piecing together a narrative they hope will convince jurors of the former president’s involvement in illegal activities aimed at influencing the 2016 presidential campaign. The testimony thus far has painted a picture of a calculated effort to suppress stories potentially damaging to Trump’s presidential aspirations.
Prosecutors are delving into the specifics of how Trump and his associates allegedly orchestrated these payoffs. The courtroom came to know of Gary Farro, a banker at First Republic Bank, who assisted Trump’s former attorney Michael Cohen in setting up accounts, one of which was used to facilitate a payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels, silencing her allegations of a sexual encounter with Trump, which he denies.
These investigations came after the release of a recording on October 7, 2016, where Trump boasted about touching women inappropriately. Cohen then found out the next day that Daniels had revealed an alleged affair with Trump, according to prosecutors.
Trump, currently required to be present in court four days a week, has maintained his innocence and pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to the hush money transactions. However, as the prosecution presents detailed testimony on email exchanges and bank accounts, Cohen’s impending testimony looms over the proceedings, potentially serving as a critical pivot point in the trial.
Cohen invested his own money into one of the LLCs, Essential Consultants, which then sent money to Daniels’ lawyer to prevent her from going public with her story. Cohen is accused of creating LLCs to make secret payments without the candidate’s involvement, as Trump’s campaign was worried that more reports of inappropriate behavior could harm his chances in the election, according to prosecutors.
Farro testified after Rhona Graff, a long-serving assistant to Trump, testified. Graff informed the jurors that she had seen Daniels in the reception area of the 26th floor of Trump Tower before the 2016 election.
