In an unprecedented move that highlights the international dimension of domestic student activism, Iranian universities are offering scholarships to US students expelled over anti-Israel protests. Reports indicate that Shiraz University and other institutions in Iran are extending a hand to those students dismissed from American and European universities for their participation in pro-Palestine demonstrations.
This scholarship program has been framed as a gesture of solidarity by the Iranian institutions. Mohammad Moazzeni, head of Shiraz University, has stated that, “Students and even professors who have been expelled or threatened with expulsion can continue their studies at Shiraz University, and I think that other universities in Shiraz, as well as Fars Province, are also prepared to provide the conditions.”
The development comes amid a backdrop of heightened tensions and crackdowns on campus protests in the US. Demonstrations have intensified since the recent conflict erupted in Gaza, with law enforcement agencies making over 2,000 arrests across numerous college campuses. Pro-Palestinian demonstrations have not only swept across the US but have also found resonance in countries such as the UK, Canada, Australia, France, and Italy.
Amidst the escalating situation and the fierce response by US law enforcement, Iranian academic institutions seem to be positioning themselves as sanctuaries for academic freedom and protest. Shiraz University, known for its prestige and research orientation, is leading this effort, with other universities such as Iran University of Science & Technology and Allameh Tabataba’i University following suit.
Iran’s offer to admit expelled pro-Palestinian students and provide them with conditions and bonuses equivalent to what they had in their home countries is a significant development, likely to be met with mixed reactions. The proposal by Mansour Anbia, “The university offers to admit the expelled pro-Palestinian students and provide them with the same conditions and bonuses that they used to enjoy in their own country.” ATU President Abdollah Mo’tamedi also said the university was “prepared to offer scholarships and teach the Persian language to the expelled pro-Palestinian students and professors.”
“They exert a lot of violence in order to contain this raging movement and have even threatened to expel the students from universities and hinder their employment in the future, and such autocratic methods show the decline of global arrogance,” Moazzeni said, according to PressTV.
