In the Midst of Conflict, Ukraine Seeks MQ-9 Reaper Drones From US for Advanced Reconnaissance

    Published on

Ukraine has placed a significant emphasis on enhancing its reconnaissance capabilities, a key element in this strategic maneuver is the procurement of MQ-9 Reaper drones from the United States, a request that has been repeatedly made by Kyiv.

Ukraine has been seeking the MQ-9 Reaper, developed by General Atomics, as it anticipates another major counteroffensive later in the year. The drone is renowned for its extended endurance and payload capacity, capable of flying for about 27 hours at altitudes up to 50,000 feet, carrying up to 3,850 pounds. These features make the MQ-9 a highly valuable asset for conducting extensive surveillance and precision strikes. As reported by Politico, the MQ-9 Reaper would be repurposed from its initial strike role to exclusively aid in surveillance, assisting in identifying Russian targets deep behind the front lines.

However, the request for MQ-9 Reaper drones comes with a backdrop of hesitation from Washington, stemming from concerns that the drones could be shot down by Russian forces. In a significant alteration to the initial request, Kyiv has reassured the US that the drones would solely be used for intelligence gathering, rather than strike missions. This shift aims to reduce the risk of loss or capture by Russian forces and would likely involve removing the drone’s heavy payloads such as air-to-ground Hellfire missiles.

The Pentagon has not yet approved the transfer of the Reapers, remaining cautious about the possibility of losing sensitive technology if a drone were to be downed and recovered by Russian forces. The loss of a Reaper earlier in the year during an aerial encounter over the Black Sea, where a Russian Su-27 fighter jet neutralized the drone, has served as a reminder of the vulnerability of these assets.

The request for MQ-9s has been highlighted by sources familiar with the matter, indicating that Kyiv has been increasing its interest in the drones. The MQ-9’s advanced multi-mode electro-optical sighting systems and communications technology could provide critical support in coordination with ground and air assets, monitoring Russian surface movements and transmitting valuable data.

The strategic calculus for Ukraine involves pairing the Reaper with the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) recently supplied by the US. This combination would potentially allow for the collection of target information by the Reaper and the execution of precision strikes by the ATACMS, thus enhancing Ukraine’s counteroffensive capabilities.

These technological advances are crucial for addressing battlefield challenges and maximizing offensive and defensive capabilities, experts note that no single piece of equipment can be a decisive factor or a “game changer” in the conflict. The availability of personnel and munitions supply remains central to the effectiveness and efficiency of Ukraine’s war effort.
