Ukraine prepares to bolster its aerial capabilities with F-16 fighter jets provided by Western allies, Russia has intensified its rhetoric, framing the move as a nuclear threat and a deliberate act of provocation. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a stark warning, stating that no matter the modification, “we will treat them as nuclear-capable and we will consider this step of the United States and NATO as a purposeful provocation.”
The Russian position, which has been echoed by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, has not changed since it was first announced that Kyiv would be receiving the jets. Lavrov had previously stated, “If they do not understand this, then they are worthless as military strategists and planners.”
Despite the F-16s’ potential to be fitted with nuclear weaponry, Ukraine does not have a nuclear arsenal, and there is no indication that NATO allies with nuclear capabilities intend to share them with Kyiv.
The F-16s, expected to arrive from Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, and Belgium, will serve as a significant upgrade to Ukraine’s aging fleet of Soviet-era aircraft. The F-16s are praised for their longer range, better weapons capabilities, and greater maneuverability. They align with other US equipment that Ukraine has been receiving.
In conjunction with the warning about the F-16s, Russia has signaled its readiness to conduct military drills focused on tactical nuclear weapons as a deterrent to Western support for what it calls “terrorist actions by the Kyiv regime.”
The Russian Ministry’s statement suggested that these drills are designed to “cool down the ‘hotheads’ in Western capitals, help them realize the possible catastrophic consequences of the strategic risks they generate.”
Despite Russian claims, it’s unclear how the F-16s alone would make a significant difference in any nuclear strike against Russia, as some Soviet-era Ukrainian aircraft like the Su-24 and MiG-29 can already be modified to carry nuclear weapons. Ukraine’s Su-24s have been adapted to launch British Storm Shadow missiles.
Russia has deployed advanced air-defense systems such as the S-400, some of which are more sophisticated and effective than the threats faced by F-16s in previous war zones, Business Insider’s Jake Epstein reported. “There is a gazillion ways to detect these F-16s,” Brynn Tannehill, a defense analyst and former US Navy aviator, told Epstein.
