Netherlands and Poland to Bolster Air Defenses with Advanced U.S. Missiles

    Published on

The U.S. State Department has given a green light for a significant upgrade to the air defense arsenals of the Netherlands and Poland. In deals worth nearly $2 billion, these European nations are set to receive the latest in missile technology, the AGM-88G AARGM-ER—Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missile—Extended Range.

The strategic move to acquire such advanced weaponry comes amid growing tensions and the ever-evolving nature of threats in the region. Both the Netherlands and Poland, historically operating F-16 fighter jets, are shifting to the advanced F-35A Lightning II, which boasts Suppression/Destruction of Enemy Air Defense missions among its primary capabilities. The AARGM-ER is expected to significantly bolster these capabilities.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has informed Congress of the potential Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programs, proposing contracts valued at $700 million for the Netherlands and a heftier $1.275 billion for Poland. Once the deals are ratified, the Dutch will procure 265 missiles while Poland is set to obtain 360 missiles, in addition to several guidance and control sections.

But what makes the AARGM-ER a game-changer? It is essentially an evolution of the AGM-88E AARGM and is designed to suppress and destroy enemy air defenses by targeting radar emitters. Its new Guidance Section features cutting-edge technology, including a passive anti-radiation homing receiver, satellite and inertial navigation systems, and a millimeter-wave radar for terminal guidance. It also has a unique capability to transmit images of the target before impact, enhancing the missile’s effectiveness against radar and communication sites, including those that shut down to evade incoming anti-radiation missiles.

This significant expansion of missile capabilities is not just about quantity; it is about qualitative superiority. The AARGM-ER boasts double the range and speed of its predecessor, the AGM-88E, thanks to a new rocket motor and warhead, along with aerodynamic design improvements. Notably, its design also allows it to fit inside the F-35’s weapons bays, circumventing the limitations of previous AGM-88 versions.

The proposed sales, as stated by the DSCA notice, will “improve the Netherlands’ and Poland’s capabilities to meet current and future threats” by enhancing the survivability of their tactical aircraft. Moreover, the integration of the AARGM-ER onto the F-35 highlights a concerted effort to maintain air superiority and defend against sophisticated air defense systems.
