Satellite Imagery Captures Devastation at Luhansk Fuel Depot After Suspected Missile Strike

    Published on

In the wake of a suspected missile attack on an oil depot in the Russia-occupied Luhansk, satellite images have surfaced, revealing significant damage to the infrastructure. The visuals captured a day after the strike, on May 8, show the aftermath of a fiery onslaught that left at least three fuel storage tanks in ruins.

The leader of the Moscow-backed administration in Luhansk, Leonid Pasechnik, attributed the destruction to an attack by Ukrainian forces using ATACMS missiles on the night of May 7. Pasechnik detailed the repercussions of the strike, which included injured personnel, impaired power lines, and ignited high-pressure gas pipelines. Consequently, the surrounding localities experienced disruptions in their electricity supply.

Notably, Ukrainian officials have abstained from commenting on the incident, maintaining silence over their involvement or the specifics of the operation. The strategy appears to be part of a broader pattern wherein Ukrainian forces have been systematically targeting fuel storage and processing facilities across Russian and Russian-affiliated territories. Such strikes are presumed to be tactical moves aimed at disrupting the adversary’s military logistics and the export of oil products.

In the recent months, a series of similar attacks, purportedly conducted by Ukrainian drones, have struck numerous facilities far and wide, from Vologda to Tatarstan. These operations stretch well into the Russian heartland, demonstrating the reach and resolve of Ukrainian military capabilities.

The attack on the Luhansk oil depot aligns with this series of strikes and underscores a strategic offensive against logistical nodes critical to Russian military operations. The imagery, provided by U.S.-funded Radio Liberty and corroborated by satellite photos published by other sources, adds credence to the reports of a successful strike. The visual evidence exhibits charred remnants and gutted structures, painting a stark picture of the attack’s potency.

Furthermore, the incident in Luhansk was not isolated, with reports of attacks on an oil depot in Russia’s Krasnodar Krai and a refinery in Salavat emerging as part of a pattern of Ukrainian strikes deep within Russian territory. These developments signal a persistent, perhaps intensifying, phase of the conflict wherein critical infrastructure is becoming a primary target.

This incident arrives amid a backdrop of heightened scrutiny over Russia’s military operations, as suggested by the recent Victory Day parade in Moscow, where the display of a solitary tank hinted at the pressures faced by the Russian armed forces. This subtle yet telling detail reflects the underlying challenges Russia might be confronting during this turbulent period.
