Rift Over Rafah: Tensions Soar as Gaza’s Critical Crossing Remains Shut

    Published on

The reopening of the Rafah border crossing, a critical passage for Palestinians in Gaza seeking medical treatment and humanitarian aid, remains a focal point of regional tension. The crossing has been a lifeline for the nearly 2 million Palestinians living in Gaza, providing a rare gateway to the outside world amidst the enclave’s dire humanitarian conditions.

The closure of Rafah has left medical facilities in Gaza overwhelmed and under-resourced, with countless Palestinians like Ni’ma Ali Imad anxiously awaiting the chance to seek necessary care for her son Mohammed, who was gravely injured during Israeli shelling. Mohammed’s plight symbolizes the acute medical crises facing many Palestinians, whose injuries cannot be adequately treated within the besieged strip. As Gaza’s medical system buckles under the strain of prolonged conflict and limited supplies, the reopening of Rafah is seen as a critical step towards alleviating human suffering.

The diplomatic row between Egypt and Israel intensifies as the crossing’s operation becomes a point of contention. Israel, having seized control of the Palestinian side of the crossing during military operations, now finds itself at odds with Egypt, historically a mediator in the region and a country that shares a border with Gaza. Israel asserts that the onus is on Egypt to reopen Rafah, which has been refuted by Cairo. Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry has condemned what he views as a distortion of facts, placing the humanitarian crisis squarely on the shoulders of Israeli policy.

Israel’s relationship with the Palestinian Authority (PA) adds another layer of complexity to the issue. The PA has rebuffed an Israeli proposal to facilitate the operation of the Rafah crossing, rejecting any arrangement that does not advance the broader goal of statehood. Meanwhile, Israel continues to voice security concerns, stating that the crossing cannot be returned to Hamas control, an Islamist group that has governed Gaza since 2007. This insistence casts a shadow over efforts to find a resolution.

Israel has said that it will never let Hamas take control of the border crossing. The Egyptian official told CNN that Egypt didn’t want Hamas to be in control either, but that Israeli control is also unacceptable.

“It needs to be in the hands of the Palestinians,” the official said, adding that the crossing could be placed under the control of the Palestinian civil defense. “These are neither Hamas nor Fatah (a rival party to Hamas).”
