US Reinforces Air Dominance in Asia-Pacific with Deployment of F-22 Raptors to South Korea

    Published on

In a move underscored by the ongoing regional tensions and a commitment to ensuring stability in the Indo-Pacific, the U.S. Air Force has stationed several F-22 Raptor stealth fighter jets at Kunsan Air Base in South Korea. This strategic deployment, as reported by the Department of Defense on May 12, 2024, showcases the Pacific Air Forces’ adeptness in swiftly mobilizing and positioning cutting-edge forces across strategic vantage points.

The number of F-22 jets involved remains undisclosed; however, imagery from the U.S. 8th Fighter Wing confirms the presence of at least four Raptors, a formidable sight on Kunsan’s tarmac. Such deployments, apart from reinforcing the air dominance of the United States, serve a dual purpose: bolstering defense commitments to allies and enhancing joint operational capabilities with regional forces.

This recent relocation marks the first publicized arrival of F-22 jets in South Korea since the Seoul International Aerospace & Defense Exhibition in the previous year. Their reappearance after seven months is interpreted as a direct response to rising regional tensions, illustrating the U.S. Air Force’s flexible and rapid operational capabilities.

The presence of F-22 jets is likely to pave the way for combined aerial exercises with South Korean forces. With South Korea’s own advanced F-35A fighters, these joint drills are expected to fortify interoperability and exhibit a consolidated defense posture against potential adversaries. It is through such integrative training that the strategic alignment and readiness of allied forces are significantly elevated.

The F-22 Raptor, a product of Lockheed Martin, is lauded for its unrivaled stealth properties, supersonic cruising capability without afterburners (supercruise), and superior agility. The aircraft’s sophisticated suite of sensors and avionics provides unparalleled situational awareness, making it a preeminent figure in air superiority missions. In service since December 2005, the F-22 can reach Mach 2.25 speeds and operate at altitudes surpassing 50,000 feet. Its diverse role encompasses air dominance, ground attack, electronic warfare, and signals intelligence.

What’s interesting about this arrival is that it is the first time in seven months that the F-22 Raptors of the U.S. Air Force have publicly arrived in South Korea since October 2023, according to the local media Yonhap News Agency. Regarding the joint exercise, it is noted that the F-22s are likely to participate alongside South Korean Air Force F-35A fighters as part of a deployment comprising a total of 30 aircraft. Additionally, the activities will be directed by the Aerospace Operations Command, with the participation of the United States Army, Navy, and Marine Corps.
