In a candid expression of frustration, Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska has publicly criticized fellow Republicans for their presence at former President Donald Trump’s hush money trial in New York, labelling the spectacle as “ridiculous” and questioning the prioritization of Senate duties. As the first criminal trial of an American president unfolds, with Trump facing charges of falsifying business records linked to payments made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels, the political theatre surrounding the proceedings has not gone unnoticed.
“Do we have something to do around here other than watch a stupid porn trial? I mean, this is ridiculous,” Murkowski was quoted as saying in response to inquiries about the cluster of GOP members who have made the trek to Manhattan’s courthouse this week. The comments by Murkowski, a notable figure on the Senate’s powerful spending committee and a senator who voted to convict Trump in his second impeachment trial, underscore a growing rift within the party as some rally around the embattled former president.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), former GOP presidential primary candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, and Senators JD Vance (R-Ohio), Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), and Rick Scott (R-Fla.) were among the prominent Republicans who attended the trial. Their attendance seems to be a strategic show of support, with Trump acknowledging his surrogates, stating, “I do have a lot of surrogates, and they are speaking very beautifully.”
However, not all within the party share the sentiment. Senator Mitt Romney of Utah also conveyed disapproval, finding it “very difficult to watch” as fellow Republicans appeared at the courthouse, a scene he regards as demeaning and somewhat embarrassing for the party.
“There is a level of dignity and decorum that you expect of people who are running for the highest station in the land, and going out and prostrating themselves in front of the public to try and apparently curry favor with the person who’s our nominee, it’s a little embarrassing,” said Romney in a video clip.
The trial, which began last month, has revived discussions about the former president’s conduct and has become a flashpoint in the broader debate about his influence over the Republican Party. Murkowski, who has not shied away from breaking ranks with her party in the past, has hinted at her discomfort with the party’s direction, especially its alignment with Trump.
“I wish that, as Republicans, we had a nominee that I could get behind. I certainly can’t get behind Donald Trump,” she stated in a recent interview, reflecting on her concerns about the GOP’s trajectory.
On the other side of the aisle, House Speaker Johnson has dismissed the trial as a “sham,” intended to derail Trump’s political activities. “This is the fifth week that President Trump has been in court for this sham of a trial. They are doing this intentionally to keep him here and keep him off of the campaign trail,” he contended outside the courthouse, further asserting Trump’s innocence of the charges.
