The Ukrainian Navy has claimed a significant strategic victory with the reported destruction of the Russian minesweeper Kovrovets on May 19, as tensions continue to escalate in the Black Sea. The incident, which occurred overnight, adds to a series of setbacks for Russia’s naval capabilities in the region, with Ukraine stating that a significant portion of Russia’s Black Sea fleet has been neutralized since the conflict began.
The destruction of the Kovrovets, classified under Project 266 Akvamarin and known in NATO parlance as the Yurka class, was announced by the Ukrainian Navy. The minesweeper, designed for deep-sea mine detection, sweeping operations, and guiding ships through minefields, has been a crucial asset for Russia’s naval operations. With capabilities to detect mines up to 150 meters deep, the vessel was equipped with two 30mm AK-230M naval guns and boasted a high-resolution Lynx radar.

The Ukrainian offensive appears to have prompted a strategic repositioning of Russian naval assets, with the Black Sea Fleet being redeployed away from vulnerable ports in occupied Crimea to Novorossiysk. This move was a direct result of the successive successful Ukrainian strikes on the fleet, leading to the withdrawal of nearly all major Russian ships from the region, as confirmed by Navy Spokesperson Dmytro Pletenchuk.
