In a significant setback to Russia’s maritime capabilities, Ukrainian forces have reportedly destroyed the Russian minesweeper Kovrovets, a key asset of Moscow’s Black Sea Fleet. This comes as the latest in a series of Ukrainian strikes that have targeted the fleet, steadily eroding its operational strength.
The Ukrainian Navy announced on May 19 that it had “destroyed” the sea minesweeper Kovrovets overnight. This strike challenges Moscow’s previous assertions that it had thwarted attacks on occupied Crimea. The Kovrovets, a Soviet-era vessel designated by NATO as the Yurka class, was equipped to detect mines up to 150 meters deep and was armed with two 30mm AK-230M naval guns and a high-resolution Lynx radar system. At the time of the destruction, the vessel had a standard crew capacity of 68.
Following this reported success, Ukraine has not disclosed the specifics of the attack, keeping the details of their strike capabilities ambiguous. Meanwhile, Russian authorities, including the Russian Defense Ministry, had not issued a response to Ukraine’s claim of the successful strike as of the reporting period.
The Ukrainian Navy’s campaign against the Russian Black Sea Fleet has been marked by a string of attacks, including one on Kommuna, a salvage ship with a century-long history, earlier in April. Ukraine’s tactics have been potent enough to prompt a significant strategic redeployment by Russia, which has withdrawn most of its major warships from the ports in Crimea. These assets are now reportedly stationed at Novorossiysk, a port in the northeastern Black Sea, seen as a safer location from Ukrainian assaults.
This proactive Ukrainian engagement against the Black Sea Fleet has had a considerable impact. The Strategic Communications Center of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (StratCom) has reported that as of early February 2024, a third of the fleet’s warships had been rendered inoperative, including 24 ships and a submarine.
Amid the war, Ukraine has continued to innovate in its maritime operations despite lacking a substantial navy of its own. Utilizing missiles and an array of maritime suicide drones, Ukraine has been able to disable or severely damage at least 17 vessels of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.
The destruction of the Kovrovets is yet another poignant example of the vulnerability of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, which has been substantially diminished since the invasion began in February 2022. The fleet has particularly suffered losses among patrol boats and landing craft, underscoring the effectiveness of Ukraine’s defensive measures.
