Global Uprising: Citizens Demand Regulation and Halt on AI Development Amidst Existential Risks

    Published on

From the streets of London to the shores of Brazil, a wave of global discontent is sweeping across the world, as citizens voice their concerns over the unchecked development of artificial intelligence. This movement, known as “Pause AI,” calls for a moratorium on the creation of cutting-edge AI systems until thorough safety evaluations can be conducted, a demand that resonated in protests across thirteen countries.

The urgency is palpable. “Stop the race, it’s not safe,” chant protesters outside the U.K.’s Department of Science, Innovation and Technology. The concerns aren’t unfounded; even Turing Award winners and highly cited AI researchers echo the sentiments that AI, if left improperly controlled, could lead to catastrophic outcomes.

One particular report from the U.S. government captures the grim possibilities: the rise of advanced AI and AGI could “destabilize global security in ways reminiscent of the introduction of nuclear weapons.” The race toward systems outperforming humans in critical thinking and planning breeds the potential for an “arms race,” akin to nuclear proliferation, teeming with “global- and WMD-scale fatal accidents, interstate conflict, and escalation.”

Tara Steele, a freelance writer, brings a personal angle to the protests. “I have noticed since ChatGPT came out, the demand for freelance work has reduced dramatically,” she says. “I love writing personally… I’ve really loved it. And it is kind of just sad, emotionally.”

But the conversation around AI isn’t one-sided. The AI Seoul Summit, for instance, serves as a battleground of ideas, with government leaders and tech executives from around the globe debating AI’s safety, its equitable deployment, and innovation. Here, the diversity of views is stark; some champion AI’s potential benefits, while others caution against its risks.

The narrative is complex, with countries like South Korea aspiring to carve out a leadership role in formulating global AI governance despite skeptics questioning their infrastructure’s readiness. Meanwhile, nations grapple with the digital divide between the “Global North” and “Global South,” striving for AI’s inclusivity.

AI’s integration into society is multi-faceted, from the efficiencies in agriculture and healthcare heralded in Florida’s embrace of AI to the digital ministers’ meeting in Seoul discussing safeguarding against the spread of mis- and disinformation. Yet, each innovation and application must navigate the treacherous waters of ethical and safety considerations.
