The Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen have claimed the downing of a second American drone within a week, intensifying a conflict already marked by heightened military activity and maritime threats. The U.S. military has acknowledged reports of the drone’s destruction but refrained from offering detailed comments.
This recent incident involves an MQ-9 Reaper drone, downed by the Houthis using a locally manufactured surface-to-air missile, according to Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree. Saree asserted that the drone was “carrying out hostile missions” over Yemen’s southern province of Bayda, with footage purportedly released by the Houthis showing the missile impact on the drone, which allegedly occurred last Sunday.
If confirmed, this would mark the second MQ-9 Reaper drone downed by the Houthis in a span of just one week. The previous Friday, the Houthis claimed responsibility for downing a similar drone over Marib province, hours after online footage showed what appeared to be the drone’s wreckage.
The MQ-9 Reaper, a high-value asset costing around $30 million, can operate at altitudes up to 50,000 feet and has an endurance of up to 24 hours. Since the onset of Yemen’s civil war in 2014, which saw the Houthis seize much of the country’s north and the capital, Sanaa, the U.S. military has reportedly lost at least five such drones to the rebels.
The Houthis’ recent surge in military activities extends beyond drone strikes. They have escalated their attacks on maritime targets in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, with over 50 incidents reported since November. These actions coincide with their demands for Israel to end its military campaign in Gaza, which has resulted in over 35,000 Palestinian fatalities since the conflict began on October 7. The Houthis attribute their aggressive stance to the Israeli actions, following the Hamas-led attack on Israel that claimed approximately 1,200 lives and led to around 250 hostages being taken.
On May 18, a Panama-flagged oil tanker named “Wind” came under attack by the Houthis in the Red Sea, causing substantial damage. The U.S. military’s Central Command confirmed that the vessel experienced flooding, which resulted in a temporary loss of propulsion and steering, though the crew managed to regain control and continued their voyage.
This latest drone shootdown and the maritime assaults indicate a pattern of increasing Houthi hostilities, which the group rationalizes as part of their broader campaign linked to the Israel-Gaza conflict. The U.S. Maritime Administration has noted a decline in shipping activity through the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden due to these escalating threats.
The Houthi rebels’ capabilities have been bolstered by support from Iran, which has equipped them with advanced weaponry capable of high-altitude attacks, suggesting a calculated effort to challenge U.S. and allied operations in the region. The U.S. Central Command’s reticence in detailing the specifics of the drone incident underscores the delicate nature of the ongoing conflict and the broader geopolitical ramifications.
