Russia has announced the recapture of the village of Andriivka in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, a significant development in the protracted conflict. This village, previously reclaimed by Ukrainian forces during their counteroffensive last summer, now finds itself back under Russian control. The recapture comes at a time when Ukrainian forces face significant challenges, including manpower and ammunition shortages.

Andriivka, roughly six miles south of the strategically important town of Bakhmut, had been described as “unrecognisable” when Ukrainian forces liberated it in September. The extent of the devastation was such that soldiers were unsure where to plant the Ukrainian flag. The village’s recapture is symbolically and strategically notable, as it lies on higher ground, offering advantageous positioning for artillery operations.
Moscow’s claim of having recaptured Andriivka could not be immediately verified. However, Russian forces have reportedly made advances near Chasiv Yar, Klishchiivka, and Krasnohorivka in Donetsk, as per the crowd-sourced monitoring service DeepState. Kyrylo Sazonov, a soldier of the 41st Separate Mechanised Brigade, confirmed that Russian troops were attempting to advance near Chasiv Yar, though they have not entered the town. “These advances of 50 metres forward, 50 metres back mean nothing,” Sazonov told RFERL, highlighting the fluid and chaotic nature of the frontline.
Ukrainian forces have faced a series of strategic withdrawals and tactical readjustments. Reports indicated that Ukrainian units had withdrawn from Krynky on the Russian-held side of the Dnipro river, opting to entrench in safer positions. The withdrawal involved the use of cluster bombs, which inflicted numerous casualties on Russian forces.
The broader geopolitical ramifications of these battlefield movements are underscored by the ongoing debates in Western capitals about military support for Ukraine. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has been pushing for a relaxation of White House rules to allow US missiles donated to Ukraine to be fired into Russia. This comes amid increasing pressure from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has argued that such measures are essential to counter the Russian threat effectively.
The recapture of Andriivka also coincides with intensified Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure and civilian areas. Recent missile strikes on Kharkiv have caused significant casualties and destruction. Volodymyr Zelensky described these attacks as “brutal” and accused Russia of exploiting Ukraine’s lack of air defence systems to carry out such fatal assaults.
