In a significant boost to Ukraine’s defenses, Spain has pledged to provide additional air defense missiles to bolster the Ukrainian military’s capability to counter the formidable challenge posed by Russian glide bombs. During a press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Madrid, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez confirmed the commitment of €1 billion in military aid for 2024, scaling up to a total of €5 billion by 2027.
The Spanish pledge comes at a critical juncture, as Zelenskyy stressed the urgency of acquiring seven U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems to effectively deter Russian attacks on civilian infrastructures and military targets. “If we had these modern Patriot systems, (Russian) airplanes wouldn’t be able to fly close enough to drop the (glide) bombs on the civilian population and the military,” Zelenskyy underscored. His remarks highlighted the dire situation in the Kharkiv region, recently targeted by a deadly Russian glide bomb attack on a shopping mall resulting in at least 18 fatalities.
The air defense missiles from Spain are aimed to confront the approximately 3,000 bombs Russia reportedly launches monthly at Ukraine. The ongoing war, which is now in its third year, has seen Ukraine’s forces stretched thin against Russia’s intensified advances, especially in the Donetsk region and the recent Kharkiv offensive.
The bilateral security agreement inked between the two nations also includes provisions for more Leopard tanks and artillery ammunition. Sánchez reiterated the necessity of such support, stating, “After more than two years (of war), Russia’s aggression continues, and that’s why it is more necessary than ever to redouble our support.”
Spain’s gesture of solidarity and military backing has been somewhat of an escalation from its previous contributions. According to the Kiel Institute, which tracks military assistance to Ukraine, Spain has thus far committed 330 million euros, a contribution considered modest by European standards. However, the latest commitment indicates a substantial increase in Spanish aid and is likely to enhance the collective European and global support for Ukraine.
The Patriot missile system, first introduced in the 1980s, is capable of intercepting aircraft, cruise missiles, and shorter-range ballistic missiles. Despite its efficacy and global demand, European countries have been cautious about sending these systems to Ukraine, likely due to concerns over their own defense needs.
Amidst these developments, a Western intelligence assessment suggested that Russia’s Kharkiv offensive has begun to subside. “The northern Kharkiv front has likely stabilized with Russian territorial control fragmented and not joined up,” the U.K. Defense Ministry reported. This aligns with Zelenskyy’s claims of Ukrainian forces achieving “combat control” over territories previously infiltrated by Russian troops.
