Sweden has sent a significant military aid package to Ukraine, including two state-of-the-art ASC 890 surveillance aircraft, as part of its largest tranche of support since the conflict with Russia began.
This critical support from Sweden comes in the wake of a sustained Russian onslaught that has seen more than 50 missiles and drones launched into Ukrainian territory, causing civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure. As reported by Ukrainian Air Forces commander Mykola Oleschuk, seven missiles and 32 drones were intercepted, with injuries reported in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region.
Sweden’s defense minister, Pal Jonson, stated that the donated ASC 890 aircraft, capable of identifying long-range targets and functioning as an airborne command post, would act as a “force multiplier” for the US-made F-16 fighter jets expected to arrive in Ukraine over the coming years.
The substantial military aid package from Sweden, amounting to 13 billion kronor ($1.23bn). Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch emphasized that the aid “consists of equipment that is at the top of Ukraine’s priority list,” such as air defense, artillery ammunition, and armored vehicles. While Sweden has currently ruled out sending Swedish-built JAS 39 Gripen jets to Ukraine, the possibility of contributing with the Gripen system later is being worked on, according to Jonson.
The ASCC airborne early warning and control planes are particularly crucial for enhancing Ukraine’s air defense capabilities. Jonson highlighted that these aircraft can identify incoming cruise missiles, drones, and targets on land and at sea, thus contributing significantly to the defensive strategy of the Ukrainian forces. It’s worth noting that this support entails “a temporary decline in the Swedish defense capability,” as the two ASCC 890 radar reconnaissance and command aircraft donated are the only ones Sweden has.
Sweden’s steadfast support is echoed by other European Union countries and the US, which have been working to raise military support for Ukraine. Additional military assistance includes Belgium’s pledge of 30 F-16 fighter jets, Spain’s commitment to additional air defense missiles, and the Netherlands’ delivery of parts for a Patriot air defense system to Ukraine.
