In an unprecedented move, Sweden has announced the transfer of two ASC 890 aircraft, also known as the Saab 340 AEW&C or S-100B Argus, to Ukraine. This action marks a significant enhancement of Ukraine’s military capabilities, especially in the realm of long-range radar detection and combat control, and has been described as a historic decision in the bolstering of Ukrainian defenses.
The Swedish government revealed this decision as part of a broader military aid package valued at approximately $1.3 billion. The package includes an assortment of equipment such as armored personnel carriers, guided missiles, and funds to support equipment procurement initiatives.
Swedish Defense Minister Pal Jonson emphasized the substantial impact of the ASC 890, stating, “ASC 890 will provide Ukraine with a new capability against both airborne and maritime targets. Ukraine’s capability to identify targets at long range will be strengthened. They will act as a force multiplier with the introduction of F-16.” The minister notably used “they” in the plural, suggesting that Ukraine will receive more than one aircraft, though the exact terms of the transfer remain undisclosed.
The ASC 890 aircraft are equipped with a sophisticated radar system utilizing Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) technology, capable of detecting a diverse array of targets, such as enemy aircraft and missiles, over vast horizontal and vertical ranges. Such technology represents a quantum leap in Ukraine’s military infrastructure, which has hitherto relied solely on ground radars for airspace monitoring.
Aviation expert Valerii Romanenko highlighted the strategic advantage the Swedish AWACS will provide, stating, “With the acquisition of Swedish AWACS, we are practically becoming a country with full-fledged air defense.” The expert detailed that the aircraft could “see” everything in the air, significantly improving Ukraine’s ability to defend against aerial threats such as Russian Shaheds and cruise missiles, which could exploit low-altitude gaps in ground radar coverage.
The introduction of the ASC 890 is expected to synergize with Ukraine’s anticipated acquisition of multi-role F-16 fighters, allowing pilots and air defense systems to receive direct targeting data. The information is transmitted through the tactical Link 16 network, which facilitates seamless data exchange between various defense components.
The timeline for Ukraine’s receipt of the ASC 890 is dependent on the speed of training for the crew, which consists of pilots familiar with the Saab 340 and operators from ground systems. It is anticipated that the necessary training could take several months.
Experts predict the ASC 890 will greatly augment Ukraine’s airspace monitoring capabilities, enabling more effective responses to aerial attacks. However, due to the potential threat posed by Russian anti-aircraft systems, the Swedish aircraft are expected to operate with caution, employing tactics to maintain security while optimizing their surveillance role.
The strategic deployment of the ASC 890 is also being discussed to ensure the aircraft are not based within Ukrainian territory, where they could be prime targets for Russian missiles. Instead, alternative basing arrangements are being considered that would allow the Swedish aircraft to fully cover key directions of inbound hostile missiles and drones without exposing them to undue risk.
