Transgender Athlete’s Victory in Maine Track Championship Sparks Discussion on Gender and Sports

    Published on

In a Maine track and field state championship, a story unfolded that has stirred a complex conversation surrounding transgender athletes’ participation in sports. Soren Stark-Chessa, a transgender girl and a sophomore at Maine Coast Waldorf School, clinched the 800-meter title at the Maine Principals’ Association Class C girls’ outdoor track and field state championship.

Stark-Chessa, who transitioned from competing in boys’ sports as a freshman to participating on the girls’ side in her sophomore year, won the race with a time of 2:19.72. This time was notably 10.12 seconds faster than the runner-up, Houlton High junior Natalie Johnson, who finished with a time of 2:29.84.

Maine Coast Waldorf School athletic director Susan Sonntag supported Stark-Chessa’s right to compete, citing adherence to Maine statutes and the school’s commitment to providing opportunities for all students. “We support all of our students at Maine Coast Waldorf School and are proud that our students are given the opportunity to participate in all of our school programs,” Sonntag told NewBostonPost in an email statement on October 25, 2023. “In addition, MCWS adheres to Maine State Statute, Title 5, §4602 ‘Unlawful Discrimination in Education,’ which is further supported by the policies of the Maine Principals’ Association (MPA).”

The MPA’s Gender Equity and Inclusion Policy allows student-athletes to participate on teams that align with their gender identity. “The MPA is committed to providing opportunities for all students to participate in co-curricular activities and athletic competitions, regardless of their gender identity or gender expression,” the policy states. “At the same time, MPA is committed to ensuring fair competition and appropriate protections for student athletes,” the policy continues. “Consistent with its principles, MPA believes that all students should have the opportunity to participate in MPA activities in a manner consistent with their gender identity, unless such participation would result in an unfair athletic advantage or create an unacceptable risk of injury to other student athletes.”

This event in Maine echoes similar occurrences in other states, such as Connecticut, where transgender athletes have also won state championships.
