Historic Promotion: Pakistan Army Appoints First Female Christian Brigadier

    Published on

Dr. Helen Mary Roberts has made history in Pakistan, achieving the rank of brigadier as the first woman from the Christian minority to do so. Her promotion is a landmark step for inclusion and diversity within the Pakistan Army, particularly within the Pakistan Army Medical Corps where she has been a senior pathologist for 26 years. This appointment has come at a time when minority communities in Pakistan face increased scrutiny and tension, highlighting the significance of her ascent within the military ranks.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif lauded Brigadier Roberts for her exceptional service, describing her achievement as a beacon of national pride and a source of inspiration for thousands of women from minority communities. His congratulations were echoed by other politicians, including members of the Pakistan People’s Party.

“I myself and the nation congratulate Brig Helen Mary Roberts on getting the honour of the first female fromminority to be promoted as Brigadier in the Pakistan Army,” he said.

The promotion has been interpreted as a signal of progress toward gender equality and minority representation in Pakistan. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the Pakistan military, praised Brigadier Roberts as a testament to “merit and national representation.” Social media in Pakistan buzzed with messages of support and hope following the news of her promotion, with many expressing optimism about the inclusive direction of the army.

This significant step is also seen as a means of healing amidst recent attacks on minorities. The lynching of a Christian factory owner in Punjab’s Sargodha district brought the plight of minorities into sharp focus. One social media user commented that while Roberts’ promotion is not enough to “heal their wounds,” it’s comforting and empowering.

Roberts’ achievement aligns with the army’s progressive stance as demonstrated in June 2020 when Major General Nigar Johar became the first woman to be promoted to the rank of lieutenant general.

The United Nations in Pakistan joined in celebrating Roberts’ promotion, saying, “Congratulations to Helen Mary Roberts, who has just made history as the first-ever Christian and the first-ever woman from a religious minority to be promoted to the rank of Brigadier in the Pakistan Army. She serves in the Army Medical Corps.”
