The recent escalation in the Ukraine conflict has brought forth stark warnings from Moscow, with Russian officials cautioning the United States about the potential “fatal consequences” of miscalculations as Ukrainian forces, empowered by Western weapons, strike targets within Russian territory.
Moscow’s explicit warnings followed the Biden administration’s quiet authorization allowing Ukraine to use some U.S.-provided weapons to strike military objectives in Russian territory. The Kremlin on Monday conveyed its stern message through Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, as reported by the Russian state news agency RIA. Ryabkov emphasized, “I would like to warn American leaders against miscalculations that could have fatal consequences. For unknown reasons, they underestimate the seriousness of the rebuff they may receive.”
“I urge these figures [in the US] … to spend some of their time, which they apparently spend on some kind of video games, judging by the lightness of their approach, on studying what was said in detail by Putin,” Mr Ryabkov said.
The permission granted by the U.S., along with similar permissions by some European governments, has enabled Kyiv to flex its defensive muscle as Russian forces push into the Kharkiv region. The U.S. policy has been clarified, stating that long-range strikes inside Russia remain restricted, and weapons supplied by the U.S. can be used for counter-fire purposes in the ongoing encounters along the Ukrainian border.
In direct response to these developments, President Vladimir Putin also issued his own caution to the West, highlighting that “Constant escalation can lead to serious consequences.” He questioned how the United States would behave considering the parity between the two nations in strategic weapons. Ryabkov reiterated Putin’s “very significant warning,” urging U.S. officials to take the Russian leader’s words with the utmost gravity.
The use of U.S.-supplied Himars missiles by Ukrainian troops has been a point of contention, with a recent strike believed to have destroyed an advanced air defense system in Belgorod, equipped with S-300/400 surface-to-air missiles. This action has cast doubts on whether the strike adhered to the limits imposed by the U.S. concerning weapon use on Russian soil. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his officials have sought greater flexibility in using Western weaponry for long-range strikes, arguing that restrictions are hindering Ukraine’s ability to defend itself effectively.
While the U.S. has allowed strikes within Russia only if they pose an immediate threat to Ukrainian forces, the increased cross-border attacks have alarmed Russia, prompting them to issue repeated warnings. The recent destruction of a convoy of Russian trucks by Ukrainian drones, as recorded by the brigades involved in the attack, illustrates the heightened tensions and military activity in the region.
