Denmark, in a move signaling its commitment to Ukraine’s defense and a significant shift in European defense policy, is on the verge of supplying Kyiv with F-16 fighter jets amidst an intensifying conflict with Russian forces. This action shows a united effort by different NATO members to enhance Ukraine’s air power in line with the country’s request for advanced military equipment to protect its airspace.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, during a joint-press conference with Nordic leaders and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Stockholm, initially stated that Denmark would deliver F-16s to Ukraine “within the next month.” This timeline was later revised to “the next few months”. The Danish-provided F-16s, part of a broader package promised in August 2023 by Denmark and the Netherlands following a transfer authorization from the United States, are expected to enhance Ukraine’s air defense capabilities, an area where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged for support.
Despite the promise of 61 American-built F-16s by both Denmark and the Netherlands, reports have surfaced about delays in the delivery. Now, Frederiksen has clarified that only five Danish F-16s will be part of the initial batch, with the Netherlands contributing a more substantial total of 42, and the first 24 expected to be delivered soon.
Frederiksen underscored the urgent need for Western nations to “donate” not just aircraft but also ammunition and air defense systems, as the war in Ukraine enters a perilous phase. “The main reason for the losses on the Ukrainian side is lack of air defenses,” she commented, underlining the strategic importance of air support in the conflict.This requirement has become urgent as Ukrainian forces have encountered a substantial surge of attacks from Russia, including a recent two-pronged assault in the Kharkiv region, although Ukrainian military officials have disputed reports of Russian progress in the area.
The F-16s are not only crucial for Ukraine’s defense but have also become a symbol of NATO’s response and support. The Dutch Defense Minister Kajsa Ollongren, in a bold statement at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, said the jets could potentially be used to strike targets inside Russia, with the provision that Ukraine uses them in compliance with international law and self-defense principles, as outlined by the U.N. Charter.
This development aligns with the training of Ukrainian pilots who have finished basic flight, ground, and language training on F-16 fighters in Britain and are progressing to advanced flight training offered by the French Air Force.Ukraine gears up its pilot force, the Western-supplied F-16s are anticipated to arrive in the first half of 2024.Belgium and Norway have also pledged to supply F-16s to Ukraine, though Belgium has specified that its aircraft, arriving in 2025, can only be utilized within Ukrainian airspace.
