Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, carrying astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) for the first time, has encountered additional helium leaks en route, raising concerns but not jeopardizing the mission’s safety. This journey is part of a significant milestone in U.S. space history, marking only the sixth time a new American crewed spacecraft has ventured into space.
The maiden crewed flight of the Starliner, which is Boeing’s bid under NASA’s Commercial Crew Program to compete with SpaceX’s Dragon capsule, lifted off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida atop an Atlas V rocket. However, after reaching orbit on Wednesday, mission control detected two new helium leaks in the spacecraft, adding to an earlier leak that was discovered and deemed manageable prior to launch.
Helium, an inert gas, is used in the spacecraft’s thruster systems to enable maneuvering in space by pressurizing the fuel lines. According to Boeing, helium is not combustible or toxic, and these leaks are not posing a safety risk to the crew, nor are they expected to impact the docking process with the ISS. Jim May, a Boeing aerospace engineer, confirmed via social media that Starliner is maintaining ample helium reserves, and two of the three leaks have been corrected.
Notably, during a live NASA broadcast, mission managers gave the go-ahead for rendezvous and docking with the ISS, reassuring that the crew and vehicle were safe. The astronauts, Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, were made aware of the new leaks and were instructed to perform a valve shutdown, which slightly shortened their rest period. Despite these challenges, Starliner is still on track to complete its docking with the ISS, with the hatch opening and the crew being welcomed aboard the orbiting lab planned as per schedule.
The flight represents a key moment in the resumption of U.S. crewed space missions, following in the historical footsteps of the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and Space Shuttle programs, as well as SpaceX’s Dragon. It also marks a significant comeback for Boeing, which experienced delays in its crewed launch program due to safety concerns and technical issues, including an earlier helium leak and a valve issue on the rocket’s second stage.
This mission, once docked, will allow Williams and Wilmore to live and work aboard the ISS for about eight days. Mission Director Ken Bowersox has cautioned against fixing on the planned landing date, emphasizing that conditions must be optimal and test objectives met before Starliner’s return is considered.
