Boeing’s Starliner capsule, with NASA astronauts aboard, successfully docked with the International Space Station (ISS) on Thursday. The docking at 1:34 p.m. ET, over the southern Indian Ocean, not only represents the inaugural delivery of astronauts by Starliner to the orbiting laboratory but also solidifies its role alongside SpaceX’s Dragon in ferrying crews to and from space.
Following the Wednesday launch, a series of issues including a thruster malfunction and helium leaks emerged, casting uncertainty on the mission’s outcome. Of Starliner’s 28 reaction-control thrusters, five malfunctioned as the spacecraft approached the ISS. CAPCOM Neal Nagata informed the crew of the decision to delay the initial docking attempt to ensure the ISS’s stringent zero fault tolerance for spacecraft control was not compromised.
Through collaborative efforts between the astronauts, NASA mission control, and Boeing, four of the problematic thrusters were revived after hot-fire tests, allowing for the second docking attempt to proceed. The successful rendezvous was somewhat delayed but ultimately completed.
After docking, astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams were welcomed with traditional ISS customs, including the ringing of a bell and zero gravity “dancing.” The reception signified more than just a warm greeting; it underscored the successful end of a complex journey. Williams, in her remarks, captured the sentiment of triumph: “We have another family up here, which is just awesome. And we’re just happy as can be to be up in space.”
The Starliner faced additional hurdles beyond the thruster issues, with helium leaks detected both prior to and during the mission. These were carefully monitored and managed by flight control teams, ensuring that the spacecraft remained stable and that the crew was never in danger.
While the thrusters and helium leaks presented significant technical challenges, the emphasis from both NASA and Boeing is on the learning opportunity they provide. NASA’s Commercial Crew Program manager Steve Stich expressed optimism, stating, “Those are pretty small issues to deal with and we’ll figure them out for the next mission. So I don’t see these as significant at all.”
