Recent reports from Russian sources have sparked international concern by alleging that Ukraine has used American-supplied arms to launch attacks inside Russian territory. These reports indicate that Ukrainian forces deployed the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) in an attack on the city of Belgorod, marking the first time such U.S.-supplied weaponry has been used on Russian soil since the U.S. government lifted previous restrictions.
The move has elicited a strong warning from Norway’s top military official, General Eirik Kristoffersen, who cautioned that NATO’s window to prepare against Russia has significantly decreased. “At one point someone said it’ll take 10 years but I think we’re back to less than 10 years because of the industrial base that is now running in Russia,” Kristoffersen stated, emphasizing the need for NATO to rebuild its forces within a much shorter two to three-year timeframe.
In response to Kyiv’s actions, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has expressed his belief that Ukraine’s use of Western-supplied weapons to target Russian assets will not “contribute to escalation.” Contrasting with NATO and German reassurances, the Kremlin has issued a stark warning through Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, who indicated that the US could face “fatal consequences” if it disregards Moscow’s warnings. Ryabkov was quoted saying, “I would like to warn American leaders against miscalculations that could have fatal consequences,” underscoring the gravity with which Russia views the potential repercussions.
Additionally, Russian President Vladimir Putin has cautioned the West about the risks of escalating the conflict by allowing Ukraine to use its weapons to strike inside Russia. Putin underscored the seriousness of possible outcomes, hinting at the strategic parity between Russia and the US in the realm of strategic weapons.
The White House has reiterated its unwavering support for Ukraine, with national security spokesman John Kirby asserting that “There hasn’t been any single leader around the world who has supported Ukraine more and more stridently than Joe Biden.”
