A Polish soldier, identified only as Mateusz, tragically lost his life following a violent altercation at the Poland-Belarus border, where tensions have been escalating amidst a steady flow of migrants attempting to cross into the European Union. The soldier, who had been hospitalized in critical condition in the town of Hajnowka after being stabbed in the chest by a migrant through the border barrier, was later transferred to a military hospital in Warsaw where he succumbed to his injuries.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed the nation’s grief over the loss, stating on the social platform X, “A young soldier, Mateusz, gave his life in the defense of Poland’s border.” He further acknowledged Mateusz’s sacrifice, assuring that “The motherland and his compatriots will never forget about this sacrifice.”
The incident underscores the severe pressure at the EU’s eastern boundary, a metal barrier erected by Poland in 2022 to stem the tide of individuals from the Middle East, Asia, and Africa trying to enter the bloc.
Poland and the EU claim that the migrant situation is being orchestrated by Russia and Belarus in an effort to destabilize Europe. Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski summoned the Belarusian charge d’affaires, demanding the extradition of the assailant. The Polish government has also vowed to reinforce border security measures and maintain the high military and police presence that has been a feature since 2021, when Belarus began facilitating the influx of migrants as a tactic against the EU.
Earlier on Thursday, government officials requested clarifications after it was revealed that three soldiers had been handcuffed and taken into custody by Polish military police in March. This was due to them firing warning shots in response to a group of migrants approaching on the border with Belarus.
The soldiers reportedly fired warning shots initially into the air and afterwards into the ground while attempting to halt a group of migrants moving forward on Polish land. There were no injuries reported. Polish media is covering a rising dissatisfaction within the military regarding the treatment of their fellow soldiers.
With President Andrzej Duda labeling the detention as “a shocking case,” the incident highlights the challenges faced by soldiers and the government’s responsibility to ensure their safety and legal protection.
Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that the military police overreacted and requested clarification from them and the prosecutors examining the case. One of the detained soldiers has been found innocent of the accusations.
“The soldiers at the border are carrying out a mission for the Polish state,” Kosiniak-Kamysz told a news conference Thursday.
“We are always on the side of the soldiers … of those who carry out their tasks at the border,” he said, adding that soldiers, in charge of protecting the border since 2022, have used weapons in emergency situations some 700 times.
