Significant Interception: Gulf of Oman Security Forces Confiscate Over Two Million Pounds of Explosives

    Published on

During a bold nighttime operation showcasing the unwavering watchfulness of U.S. maritime forces, numerous service members were honored for their bravery and accuracy in halting a substantial amount of explosive materials in the vital Gulf of Oman. This significant confiscation included a stateless ship carrying more than two million pounds of explosive precursors.

Between the twilight of August and the dawn of September, under the cover of darkness and with an unyielding commitment to safety, the combined forces of Marines and sailors from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), and Coast Guardsmen assigned to Patrol Forces Southwest Asia, executed a meticulously coordinated interdiction. “This interservice team consisted of Coast Guard underway officers of the deck and engineers of the watch, combined with a security detachment made up from the 26th MEU,” said the citation, provided to Military.com by the MEU. “Together, they executed a 17-hour, high-tension nighttime transit through the Strait of Hormuz.” The operation was not without peril, the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow chokepoint.

The award, the Coast Guard Meritorious Team Commendation, signed by the Coast Guard’s commandant, Adm. Linda L. Fagan, commended the “interservice team” for their exceptional synergy and execution. The mission, executed under the aegis of Commander Task Force 55.

The service members escorted the captured vessel to Naval Base Bahrain, marking a first in U.S. naval history for such a delivery, adding a new chapter to the storied legacy of U.S. maritime operations. While the origin and intended destination of the vessel remain enigmatic, what is clear is the pivotal role such interdictions play in disrupting illicit arms flows that exacerbate regional instability.

The service members were honored Nov. 9, but it wasn’t mentioned in a Marine Corps administrative message until as recently as April. In addition to the 192 Marines and sailors from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, 342 sailors aboard the USS Carter Hall were also honored.
